Just installed this 'critical' update and I now cant receive any updates as every time I scan for new updates it tells me that my copy of xp is not a valid one. The shop I bought my pc from a year and a half ago installed xp for me so now I'm well and truly ******.

This happened on my brand new Laptop. M$ were no help at all, they just told me to take the Laptop back.
There is already a hack circulating to get around Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA)

If you grass the supplier and proove it, you get a free copy. If you can't proove it, you get a discount.

To my knowledge, there isn't a true hack. Though you can evade it for now. The tools required are part of, wait for it.... IE Itself. How's that for forward thinking.

There is another way, also by M$, (unbelievable, but true) but beyond the scope of this board.

In any case, auto updates will deliver regardless. Don't forget it's their rep at stake.
