right click defaults to notepad

Working on my son's PC with XP PRO.
When you right click on a file with an unknown extension, instead of giving the option to chose a program for opening the file the file is opened or attempts to open with notepad. Not very useful or appropriate. Can anyone help? TIA raz

Try going to > start > control panel > folder options > file type > highlight the file and reset association or reset to default.

Right click the file and choose the "Open With..." option, choose the new program, and tick the option that says "always use this program to open this type of file". hope this helps.

That is the problem. Rather than listing program choices for "Open With", "Open With" defaults to notepad. I think he did a registry hack but I want to undo it. Thanks for the replies so far. raz
