Resolution Suggestion One:

# Test your Internet connection to Windows Update.

A simple solution but one that works in many circumstances!

Test to determine if your Internet connection is preventing you from reaching the Windows Update Web site. To do this, visit the following Microsoft Windows Update Web site to determine if you can download the Iuident.cab file:

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v4/iuident.cab

If a file download dialog box appears, the problem is not with your Internet connection. Click Cancel. If you cannot connect to this link, and you receive a "Page Cannot Be Displayed" error message, your Internet connection is preventing you from reaching the Windows Update site.

I TRY THIS OPTION AND I HAVE NO PROBLEM

-----------------------------------------------

Resolution Suggestion Two:

# Reconfigure or update your firewall program.

Reconfigure or update your firewall program so that Windows Update is not blocked, and then try to update your computer again by using Windows Update. For information about how to reconfigure or update your firewall program, see the documentation that was included with the program, view the Help files for your program, or contact the manufacturer's technical support department.

e.g It my mean Opening TCP/IP 443 in both directions for this process: %windir%\system32\svchost.exe

I DONT HAVE A FIREWALL PROGRAM.
-----------------------------------------------

Resolution Suggestion Three:

# Remove Windows Update entries from the HOSTS file.

To remove Windows Update entries from the HOSTS file, follow these steps:

-Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Notepad
-On the File menu, click Open.
-In the Files of type box, click All Files.
-In the Look in box, locate the following folder:

C:\Winnt\system32\drivers\etc\

-Double-click to open the hosts file.
-Remove any lines that contain entries for Windows Update (http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com).
-On the File menu, click Save.
-Close Notepad.

I have seen the 0x80072EFD error resolved by this tip many times...

HERE I AM... I DON'T HAVE A HOSTS FILE... I NEED TO STOP HERE
AND SOLVE SOMETHING?

WHAT HAPPEN WITH THE NEXT SUGGESTIONS?
I TRY THEM ALREADY BUT THE PROBLEM IS STILL THERE.
I DON'T HAVE SPYWARE... I ALLREADY SOLVE THAT PROBLEM.
-----------------------------------------------

Resolution Suggestion Four:

# Run the IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS command.

To run the ipconfig /flushdns command, follow these steps:

-Click Start, and then click Run.
-In the Open box, type cmd, and the click OK.
-At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:

ipconfig /flushdns

Close the command window.

-----------------------------------------------

Resolution Suggestion Five:

# Add Windows Update addresses to the trusted sites list.

To add Windows Update addresses to the trusted sites list, follow these steps:

-Open Microsoft Internet Explorer.
-Click Tools, and then click Internet Options.
-Click the Security tab, and then click Trusted Sites.
-Click Sites, and then click to clear the Require server verification (https for all sites in this zone check box.
-In the Add this Web site to the zone box, type each of the following addresses, and click Add after each address:
http://Windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://V4.Windowsupdate.microsoft.com
https://v4.Windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://Download.Windowsupdate.com
http://V5.Windowsupdate.microsoft.com https://v5.Windowsupdate.microsoft.com

-Click OK to close all Internet Options windows.

-----------------------------------------------

Resolution Suggestion Six:

# Add Windows Update addresses to the proxy settings exceptions list.

If your Internet connection uses a proxy server, add the Windows Update sites to the proxy settings exceptions in Internet Settings. To do this, follow these steps:

-Open Internet Explorer.
-Click Tools, and then click Internet Options.
-Click the Connections tab, and then click LAN Settings.
-Click Advanced, and then type the following text in the Exceptions text box (all in one line):

windowsupdate.microsoft.com;v4.windowsupdate.micro soft.com;
download.windowsupdate.com

Note If you are running third-party proxy or firewall software, see your product documentation for information about how to add these sites to the exception list for those applications.

Click OK to close all Internet Options windows.

-----------------------------------------------

Resolution Suggestion Seven:

# Change the MTU setting on your router.

Yours ISP's MTU for their connection may not be correctly setup on your Broadband router and/or your computer.

Please contact your ISP's support for more assistance on this. However the following articles may be of help:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/
learnmore/ppoe.mspx

http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;283165

-----------------------------------------------

Resolution Suggestion Eight:

# Configure Norton Internet Security 2003.

Norton Internet Security 2003 may be blocking Windows Update. try this:

-Open the Norton Internet Security 2003 Application
-Click on "Norton Internet Security" button located on the left side
-Click on "Personal Firewall" located on center
-Click on "Configure" button on bottom right side
-When dialog box appears, click on "Program Control" tab
-Scroll down and find and click on "Microsoft Generic Host Process for Win32 services"
-Then click on "Modify" bottom at button of scroll box.
-When dialog box appears, click and choose "Permit" button
-Close all boxes and close Norton.
-Reboot your computer.

Hi try installing SP2 as some of your trouble seems to come from that, you have no full security. ALso NORTONS could also be the cause of this.

Hi it looks like as a last resolt you will have to do a complete reinstall of windows xp and all updates because something is stopping you from accessing these sites. and you have gone through the same as me.

Windows firewall? is that active, if so turn it off.

are there any other sites you cant get access too , or are they all microsoft ones.

if you are using a hardware router, check your MTU size, if not then use DRTCP to check your MTU and RWIN size, ideally on a 512 broadband connection the RWIN is 13900 and the MTU is 1430

as for the hosts file, try creating one, a blank notepad file with no extention, you may need to remove the extention via enabling the hide known file types option.

this is what the blank hosts file should contain: minus -start- -end-

-start-

# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost

-end-

edit your internet explorer settings under connection, LAN settings check the box that says auto detect settings, and under the connection you use , same thing in its properties, auto detect

more questions

HOW I KNOW IF THERE IS A WINDOWS FIREWALL ACTIVE?
I HAVE SERVICE PACK 1 AND I THINK IT DON'T HAVE FIREWALL PROGRAM.

>are there any other sites you cant get access too , or are they all microsoft >ones.

I allready try Yahoo, this site, AT&T, msn.com (works), t1msn.com.mx (works )
I think only hotmail and messenger and the windows update page (when i try to download the files that update the system) are the sites that don't work.

>if you are using a hardware router, check your MTU size, if not then use >DRTCP to check your MTU and RWIN size, ideally on a 512 broadband >connection the RWIN is 13900 and the MTU is 1430

I'm using dial up

I WILL TRY TO CREATE HOSTS FILE.

edit your internet explorer settings under connection, LAN settings check the box that says auto detect settings, and under the connection you use , same thing in its properties, auto detect

I'LL ALREADY DO THAT.

LOOK, MY FIRST OPTION IS NOT TO REINSTALL ALL, BECAUSE I NEED TO BACHUP ALL THE INFO, AND I HAVE HARDWARE INSTALLED, PERSONAL CONFIGURATIONS, PROGRAMS OF THE SCHOOL, IS NOT EASY, BUT IF I DONT HAVE ANOTHER OPTION I'LL DO IT... I THINK THERE ARE ANOTHER WAYS,,,

Sp1 has the "Internet connection firewall".

to check if its active, open your networks connection folder from the control panel and look for a yellow padlock on the connection you use to connect to the internet. to turn this off, goto properties of the connection, goto the advanced tab and deselect the box.

yes even on dial up you can have the wrong mtu and RWIN size, the numbers are just different.

if you could, please could you post a hijack-this log, and if possible the full specifiactions of your machine, just so we can rule other stuff out

EDIT: i just reread your origenal post and spotted safe mode, I do believe that windows update does NOT work whilst in safe mode.
