Simple Resolution Problem

Hi Friends,
I formatted and re-installed Win XP,but this time eveything appears so big at 800x600 while it becomes too small at 1024x768.I need something inbetween,but unfortunately there's no option available.In the previous XP everything was working fine.And secondly,the Win XP does not allows me to register my O.S saying I've exceeded the no. of installations allowed..so what I need to do.Please help me guys if you can.
