Have XP Home. The problem appeared long before installing XPSP2. Still shows up after turning on pc. Thought it may have been caused from software installaition. But not uninstalling anything right now. If I'm not giving enough info, let me know. Help will be greatly appriciated. Legendhasit many have seen the same problem. So, show me what u got.

Assuming it's not a virus (you have run an independant free scan of your PC from the many Anti-virus websites online.) The error message you refer to did appear in the Sasser virus days - but if you have SP2 installed you will have the patch for Sasser.

Check all your device drivers are up to date - this error message can appear if XP is not happy about a particular device.

If you are all up to date (Windows updates, drivers, Spyware and Adware scans etc), bootup from your original Windows XP disk and choose 'R' at the prompt. This is the Recovery Console - press 'enter' - you will then be taken to another screen - choose '1'. It will ask you for the Administrators password - just press 'enter'. You will come to the command prompt. Type 'chkdsk /r' and press enter. You will see a lot of activity as Windows checks all your system files - when it finds any that are corrupt - it replaces them with a fresh copy from the CD and repairs them. This procedure is known to fix errors of the type you are currently experiencing.
