Need help with error messages

Hi, over the last week or so, I have been getting error messages when using certain programs, like a graphics viewer, burning programs, music conversion programs. They all refer to not being able to read memory. One example is:
Application error
The Instruction at "0x00000000" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read"

Click OK to terminate program
Click Cancel to debug program

I have been at my wits end trying to workout what has happened. I have done a "Re-install" of Windows xp Pro and still keep getting these type of errors. I have removed every scrap of junk files, cleaned the registry but I still get the errors.
So before I end up doing the unthinkable, "Re-Formatting" and starting again, is there anybody out there with the knowledge that can advise me as to what the problem may be. For all I know, it may even be that my memory is starting to malfunction and I will have to replace the mem modules ???
I don't know.

Thanks all. Bill.

Should also have mentioned that the programs being affected, where fine up until a week or so ago. Also, I have gone and taken any programs I have installed since this happened, clean out all junk files, but still have the problem.
