Copying Disk-to-Disk

Having totally failed in resolving my system sounds problem, I have installed a new 80GB HDD (which is now C) and done a total restore of Windows XP as per the manufacurer's handbook. Lo and behold, I now have system sounds again.

After I got to this stage, I then installed the old HDD as the slave (which is now F) and have been trying to copy all my Programs and Applications across from F to C, with not much luck. Every time I copy something across from F to C (lets say WinWord) and then try to use it, it says I have to install the program from the CD supplied.

Am I missing something here? Can I not just copy and paste from F to C?

Any ideas for this ... Duh, amateur, who is just trying to short-cut reloading all his Programs, Applications and Setting?

Many thanks in anticipation.

When a program like WinWord is installed, it doesn't just copy its files to your computer. It makes additions to a number of other locations, like the registry and user application data folder. This ensures the computer knows how to use the program properly. Most programs cannot just be copied from one drive to another. You'll need to reinstall the program, or use the transfer wizard as already mentioned.

Thank You

Thanks for that Barbara.

As both my disks are in the same computer I had to think carefully about this as it wasn't really an option in the Transfer Wizard. However, it seemed to work (I treated each drive as a seperate computer) and said it had finished but I can't seem to find the Program I copied over from the F drive in the C drive.

Thanks anyway and I'll keep trying.
