Unhappy Issues with replacing priner on win XP

I'm trying to replace my Canon Multipass F80 with ta new PIXMA MP780 and experiecing the following problem.

I first removed the old SW using Windows XP add/remove SW feature. Which was successful. I reboot the computer and when I tried to install the new driver, I got an error message that basicaly said that it had found an older version of the Multipass driver and I have to remove it before I could continue !?
The old driver and SW were completely removed, I searched the HD and couldn't found any sign of the old SW. Any ideas???

I'm running Windows XP PRO SP2 version 5.1 build 2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519

Hi ... See if this helps , Open your " Windows Explorer " and If your operating system is install on the C drive ? Then expand the c drive , then go to the " Program Files " expand this as well , Now see if you can notice your old printer folder , If so , Just delete it , Then go to the following C:\Windows\Perfetch delete everything that listed , Then delete your recycling bin , Once that is done restart your computer , Once you are up and running again try to install your new printer driver

Thanks for the tips, howevr it didn't help.

Here are the findings: couldn't find the old folder under programs.
I followed your next advise and deleted the content under Windows/prefetch, and after reboot attempted laoding the new driver. The error message regarding the older version driver appeared again. Nay other ideas?

Ok try going to the following >>> My Computer > right click on it and select properties , Then hardware tab >>> devise manager >>> expand the Universal Serial Bus controllers , If you notice there is printers listed ? Just right click and select uninstall , afterward reboot your system and see if you are able to install new driver

hi have you tried the search option, see if the wizard can find it, then try documents folders and see if there is a file or folder with the name of your printer in there.

If not then before you install your printer try and load drivers from cd first, then insall your printer and see if that cures your problem.

hope this helps.

Well. I did a search and found one DLL which i beleive belongs to the multipass driver, its named MPASSMON.DLL. I tried to delete it and got an error message that access was denied.
Any ideas of how to erase this file?

Hi if you cant find it? windows cant find it? do you have nortons installed? because if you do that program does not like you uninstalling anything.
Go back into device manager and see if there is any thing in there to do with your printer, also you have unplugged your printer from the usb port have,nt you, as microsoft does mention that, also look in your spoolsv.exe.
Failing that contact cannon who's contact no's are on there website.

This one sure is a puzzle let us know how you get on.

The problem is solved.
I called Canon customer service and they told me that its a known problem where the unistall key for the old printer was not removed during the uninstall process. I erased that key and everything is working fine.

Since it a unique key, the search and regedit for : canon, multipass, F80, etc...) would not find it.
Thank you all for your help. The last advice "Hi if you cant find it? windows cant find it?" triggered to phone call to Canon.

That Registry key is 8A508AAA-3B69-4326-B89E-A6166FA0503
Located in HKEY_LOCAL, Micorsoft, Windows... Uninstall.

removal of that key allows the Canon F60_Vista32.exe file to install the driver and the Multipass to work within Vista.
