Stuck on XP Logo

Whenever I boot up normally, the machine gets stuck on the XP logo with the blue loading indicator still moving. It just never proceeds beyond this point.

The good news is that I can boot up into safe mode. In safe mode I have found that I can go to my hardware devices and "disable" my Western Digital 200 gig hard drive and then my machine will boot up fine. From there I can "enable" the drive to use it. I just have to remember to disable it before I shut my PC down or else I'll have to boot up into safe mode the next time I boot up and do it all over again.

I have run MSConfig and run a Selective startup and turned everything off. The PC will still not finish the boot process in this case.

So there is something different about a completely clean boot from selective startup and safemode that is causing the problem. Anyone have any clues what the difference is between these two?

I could run the recovery console but I wouldn't know what to do when I got there because I'm not sure what the problem is.

Any help is appreciated.

A little background info would help here!
Is the 200 Gb hd. recent? Is it simply for storage?

Sorry. I'm always afraid to give too many details for fear it will confuse the matter. The 200 gig drive is not new. I have had it for some time now and I use it only for storage. There are no programs installed on it.

Here's what happened. I was trying to install a Promise Ultra TX100 IDE controller card (because one of the IDE slots on my MB does not work). This card apparently has alot of trouble with Western Digital hard drives I have discovered. I have now found a driver for the Promise card specifically designed to fix this problem. Before I knew about this driver, the Promise card was not reading all the data on this WD drive correctly. Many of the files were corrupt i.e. MP3's wouldn't play, zip files wouldn't open etc etc. So I got fed up and pulled the Promise card out and hooked the drive back up to my mother board the way it was before. Only now I have this boot problem. I want to fix this boot problem first and then reinstall the Promise card with the new driver.

And now the plot thickens....

Thanks for that link. You know, a friend of mine told me to do the exact same thing that this article says. I have one problem. Even though the article says that you can use the the XP boot disks, I have found that you cannot. You can use them to get to the first instance of "R" repair. But once you choose to install windows, the setup disks then starts looking for the XP disk in the cd rom drive so it can install. Without the disk you cannot go further.

I do have the disk but I have no IDE slot to connect a CD drive too! That's why I was installing the IDE Controller card to begin with. Sigh...

O.K. back to the basics. Do you have the 200gb. set to "slave" via the jumpers? If so then have you tried setting it to cable select (as well as the main hd)?
If you have over looked either of these, then I would start by "clearing CMOS" via the jumper method. locate and reset CMOS by moving the jumper to the alternate position WHILE THE POWER IS OFF! Re set the jumper and then power back on. The jumper should be located next to the battery and be clearly labeled "CMOS".

I Also have this problem....

I also have this problem.... The last piece of hardware that I installed was a 250gig segagte sata drive. I did not have a problem for sometime, I installed it at the first of the summer and now 2 months later on reboots it just gets stuck on the windows boot up logo with that revolving taskbar. disabling drives does nothing for me, I know windows 2000 has had a simular problem with a virus that was let out but I don't think that it has effected XP. If any of you have any insight beyond any of this please let me know. Thank You.
