Hi,
For a while now I've had a problem with win XP profiles (or so I think). I don't sign on to my Laptop ( I only have one user profile and it has no password, and I don't get the sign on screen or the select user screen.....skips all that and goes straight to the desktop).
I've also got only one hardware profile (profile1 xp's default).
I arrange my desktop icons in a certain order ( some to left some to right ). I also have task manager auto start at start-up ( shortcut in start-up folder ). I have particular columns selected. Also I have my panel set to a particular resolution.
Now, my machine is a laptop and at work I have a second monitor plugged in at a certain resolution and I stretch the desktop across the panel to the monitor. I'm also plugged into a LAN connection ( but not on a domain ).
At home I don't have a second monitor (so panel only), and I connect to my home wireless network ( no domain ).
Now XP seems to know these two set-ups....it appears to be creating magical un-administrable profiles based on my hardware and location set-up. Which is fine when it works.....cause I can magically have slightly different looking set-ups for my desktop depending on where I work.
However it all falls down when the hardware changes slightly......For example at home I accidentally unplugged my USB mouse. Then when I went to work it loaded a whole new profile....lost all my configurations and had to start again.
This has happened loads......for instances if I hibernate at home...I'll get a new magic profile for work and home.....if I forget to plug in my LAN connection at work ( new profiles all round ). If I forget to plug in my second monitor...get the picture.....most frustrating.
Does anyone know how to turn off or manage these magic profiles.
