Home Network Problem

Running XP home in a small network in my home. 4 computers with one being used as a backup point. When attempting to access other drives/folders, i get the following error message..."<folder I'm looking for> is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator..."

I have the drive shared and the Internet connection Firewall turned off. The guest account is active.

Network names and domains all listed the same.

Any ideas? I',m sure I'm missing something easy.

Do you receive the message when trying to access the shared folder on each computer or you can't open any shared folders at all?

I had a similar problem, but it occured because I had an extra protocol (netbios) on the computer on which I could not access files. The only protocols that I have enabled are:
Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
QoS Packet Scheduler
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

Try enabling only these protocols, restart your computer, and test your configuration.

Another problem I had was that if I was logged in under "user1", and I tried to set a shared folder under "c:\documents and settings\user2", access would be denied to it. The only way to fix that is to log on as user2 and then share the folder.

Good luck!

I think you'll find that local network access through ICS requires that the firewall be active unless you use another type of firewall like ZoneAlarm, Tiny, or BlackIce. Those firewalls will make the range of your assigned private IP addresses compliant, for example range 192.168.0.100 - 192.168.0.200 ip addresses would all be allowed to interact on the local network automatically when a file is shared.
