User Profile ( My Documents files) retrieval

I have reinstalled my Windows XP Pro without reformatting the drive after a serious crash. After then I found my old User profile with My Documents files inside it and i want to retrieve it, but i was Denied Access since i have put a password on that profile. Even on DOS commmand prompt i still cant open, transfer that folder/files to my back-up disk hoping that i can browse it and save my files. Windows have created another new user profile after reinstalling, but the old user folder wasnt registered to access, just sitting there on my c:\drive.

Is there a way to open and retrieve this folder and files? Any help will be very much appreciated.

hey buddy it worked! thank you very much. been browsing the microsoft knowledge database but ive been hitting the wrong keywords such as "restore user profiles", "retrieve files" etc where it should have been claiming ownership of files/folders. anyway, youre a saviour, thanks again!
