Question Put XP on primary or logical partition????

I'm setting up my computer with a dual-boot of Windows 98se and Windows XP Home.

I intend to have three partitions.

One will be for 98 (C and will be set as active.

Another will be an extended partition with a logical drive within (I'll call D.

The third will be my XP partition.

Now, I am aware that XP has a boot manager that automatically configures itself. However, should I put XP in a logical drive in the extended partition, or should I put it in its own primary partition?

Also, I would like for both OS's to be able to access the D: drive in the extended partition, but I'd rather not have XP be able to view C:....

I think I just confused myself even further.... help.

Thanks.

First of all, you have to install Windows 98 FIRST, and after this - XP.
And also there is no problem with putting XP on extended partition.
And why you think XP won't be able to view drive C:?

If you do not want xp to see 98 and vice/versa you can hide one of the partitions but then of course you will not be able to boot the hidden OS. Why do you want to put XP on a logical partition? Common practice is putting Window OS on primary partitions. And you will need to have xp as fat32 if you want 98 to share data.

98 will be formatted as fat32, and so too will the logical drive in the extended partition.

If XP is formatted with NTFS on another primary partition, won't XP still be able to read and write to the fat32 logical partition????

Alright... then I guess I'll go with that configuration.

One last question, though:

At some point, I may add a second hard drive, which will most likely mess up my letter assignments. I know that if I set up the second hard drive without a primary partition, the letters assigned to the partitions on the first drive will not be changed... but the letters for the DVD-rom and CD burner will be.

So, I'd like to change their letter assignments now to something like R: and S:. What's the easiest way to accomplish this?

Thanks again.

With Partition Magic. I know you can change and assign drive letters with it. I dont know about the other partitioning programs.
