[quote=bookworm]In the Sound and Audio Properties dialogue box in Control Panel > go to Hardware Tab > select your C-Media sound device > click Properties > check use Use this device(enable) is selected.

Barbara, almost spot on. On 20 Sep Windows did a device driver update and installed the C-Media as my device driver. It was enabled but had the yellow exclam in Devive Manager.

I chose to roll back the driver and the C-Media AC57 was replaced by the previous SiS 7012 Wave. Quite why Mr Gates thought he knew better I don't know. Thanks for the pointer. Hope this helps as the date suggests several others have been caught by this driver 'update - degrade'.

no sound device? what the hell?

(This will fix your sound device! I guarantee!) well i installed a new hard drive then after i restarted i couldnt hear any sound out of my speakers. i was pissed... (I know they work) so i looked at my sounds under system in the control panel and it said no sound device... the whole screen was grey and you couldnt choose any options... tried for 2 days to fix it... so i got mad and gave up and went to circuit city and bought a sound card for 24.99$... Its made by creative and its called blaster audigy se. It now works and sounds better then ever before and well worth the 25$ try it.... It worked for me!

Talking Sound not workin?

Hi,
mine was like this for a monthnow and i have found how to fix it.
Go to start, run, type %SystemRoot%\system32\services.msc, press enter, scroll down until you find Windows Audio, double click it, select automatic, click apply, select start, click OK.

You will have to restart your computer for this to work.

Hope it works

Many thanks to kousonh re: "Fix your audio"

I'd been wrestling with the same problem for days following an XP crash. I was able to reinstall without formatting the HD, but XP wouldn't recognize Soundblaster. "No Audio Device". The device Mgr. said opposite device function properly at the same time.

"Start, run, type in services .msc; scroll down down to windows audio. Right click windows audio and select properties, then set startup type to automatic. Restart."[msg. shortened, so as not to clog].

It's so simple. The frustrating part is living with your level of ignorance.
Thanks, again,

Kent

"No Audio Device"

Found my way here because I'm having the same problem.
I'm running a Biostar iDEQ 210V small form factor machine with XP (SP2).
Installed a Windows Automatic Update about a month ago and my sound disappeared.

--When I look in Control Panel under "Sounds and Audio Devices", it says "No Audio Device Present" and all options under all tabs are grayed out.
--Under Device Manager, everything looks normal. No yellow circles with exclamation points, no red X, everything seems to be working fine. Windows reports that the drivers are working properly.
--I went to the Biostar website and downloaded the latest drivers on that site. The drivers appeared to install properly.
--I've tried uninstalling the drivers and letting them reinstall themselves.
--I've tried "update driver"
--I've tried the "services.msc" trick listed above, but the appropriate setting is already set for "automatic".

Any other suggestions? It's a small form factor machine, so I don't really have a slot to spare for a sound card.

Here's an odd one...

Under "Device Manager" -> Sound, video, and game controllers -> C-Media AC97 Audio Device -> Properties -> Audio Devices -> C-Media WDM Audio Device -> Properties, it says "Status: Driver is enabled but has not been started".

Of course, it doesn't give me any indication as to how I could start the driver...

Please help

Hi

I have tried every possible thing to make the audio on my comp work. I also checked in my bios that ac97 audio is enabled. But still i have no audio device problem in my sound and audio devices. When i go on hardware tab and check the device status for Realtek AC'97 audio it says "The device cannot start (code 10)". Also in my device manager under sound video game controller it shows a yellow circle with black exclamation on Realtek AC'97 audio.
This is probably due to wrong driver installation for my system. Could anybody please provide me the correct driver for my motherboard. i know the solution

hey guys, see your all having problems with your sound even though device manager says its fine. Solution: click start and go to run and type "services.msc" when you are there locate "Windows Audio", right click and set it to manual by the properties and then right click again and start the service. problem solved. Its bit quicker than reinstalling windows? no need to thank me

Since non of the above fixes worked for me, here is what did, nothing that at least for me if you take the audio drivers from the biostar site audio still does not work.

I took a guess and downloaded the "Realtek AC97" driver, 17 meg file, rebooted, all was good.

So for getting other people out the sh**, if your Ideq 210v sound is not working, Google around for the 17 meg driver just mentioned. Install (RAR file, extract, click setup, reboot).
