I have had a complete nightmare with this and have finaly cracked it.
Click on Start / Settings / Control Panel / Sound and Audio Devices - Choose the Audio Tab then on the Default device there is a drop down box. Make sure that your Sound card or on-board sound is listed ...mine is: Realtek AC97 Audio ...click on that to make sure it's the one showing in the drop down box.... Do this again for both Sound playback and Sound Recording...When you click back on the Volume Tab you should see that the device is your device you then have the option to Place Volume Icon in the Taskbar....Good Luck

This is probably due to wrong driver installation for my system. Could anybody please provide me the correct driver for my motherboard. System Restore Saved Me!

I had this same issue, "no audio device" in Sound and Audio Devices. I tried everything: updated BIOS, chipset, video driver, reinstalled service pack, ran diagnostics, and of course uninstalled and reinstalled all the right drivers, and more.

Then I decided to do a system restore. I have the service enabled for exactly this reason; this is the first time I've ever needed it.

Answer:
So if you can... DO A SYSTEM RESTORE! It worked for me!

I just installed a video card and my sound stopped working, followed your advice to go in the bios. Instead of disabling the "onboard audio" I changed it from auto to enabled. Worked like a charm

OK.... some good news!

After struggling to fix this ("no audio device") for weeks (on and off), I DID IT!

Struggling - in other words - using all the tips in this and all the other threads.

And, funnily, I did it via Intel's web site.
(Coincidentally, I am an Intel employee... :-)

How I did it?
Firstly - reinstalled Windows XP without any audio drivers.
Visited Intel's site (support and downloads) with the motherboard details and downloaded the chipset, graphics and LAN drivers.
Then installed the chipset driver then rebooted.
Then installed the graphics and LAN drivers and rebooted.
Checked that all was working OK including LAN/Internet.

THEN (and this is the important part which failed always before):

In the "Search Support & Downloads", enter "No Audio Device".
Click on #3: "Desktop Boards - Troubleshooting audio issues"
Scroll down to "Where to Find the Latest Audio Drivers" and click on "Intel® Driver Update Utility".
Click on "Check your system for the latest driver".
I then downloaded the latest driver and installed it. Reboot.
Voila!

(My wife was about to insist that we bring in a technician to fix the problem... how embarrassing...)

Question

Keeping this one going since it's helping so many.

I'm trying to help my brother get sound from his computer.

His motherboard is a Geforce 6100PM-M2 V3.0 (ECS) he has download the sound driver for his mother board, however there seems to be a problem with the computer recognizing the device. His driver is suppose to be Realtek but his pc is showing codec (not sure if that's spelled correctly).

Do we need to enable one in order to get the other one to work for him to get sound?

If there are other steps we need to take, your help is greatly appreciated!

Nickel

This should be the fix to it.
I had both my desktops with this same problem...The first I was able to "ghost" my old drive to my newer one to fix the problem....Now today I tackled my other computer with the same problem I Did the following...Right click my computer,,click manage, double-click Services and Apps,,Click Services,,Scroll down and change Windows Audio to automatic,, Make sure plug and play is also on automatic,,reboot......Now it is perfect!! Wasted hours updating drivers , different sound card, etc........good luck, Cobalt

get Belarc, copy and paste the report but leave out the win update section and the Software Licence section it gives your Win Product code
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

it's late here in the UK will check later

Tried all the tips suggested above. I have an ASUS P4PE/L motherboard and I am chocking it up to something having gone awry with the old motherboard and onboard sound. After thinking about but dismissing the idea of purchasing a new PCI sound card for an older motherboard, I realized I had a USB sound adapter for my headset. I plug it in, XP recognized it and installed the C-Media drivers automatically. Instead of connecting my headset to the adapter I have my speakers attached and it works great.
Cost... $3
