How many processes should be running?

When I open task managerm in XP, I see I have 39 processes running. What is the norm if anything. I do not have anything open or running apart from Norton. Cheers.

You probably have more running than you realize. I have 53 and am pretty much running bare bones. Google each one and see if it's something you need to have, but I would be happy to have only 39 running.

39 is pretty standard, but you can end some of them if you're going to be doing something that needs a lot of computing power. Don't end explorer.exe, svchost.exe, and pretty much everything under system, local service, or network service. Anything besides these won't cause your computer to melt down, but it may stop certain things like printers or antivirus programs. If something is not working that you need to, just restart the computer and everything will go back to normal.
