Notebook locks up when surfing using battery

My notebook locks up when I use the battery while surfing on the net using IE 6. I have to reset the computer or disconnect the battery to turn it off and restart. This doesn't happen when I have the AC adapter to power the notebook. The computer doesn't lock up at any other time.
