Question Desktop Icons background color...

hi! i'm new to this board but i've got a problem!

ok here's the prob. i've got Windows XP and i remember seeing the backgrounds to the icons "clear" when i first got XP. The font was white with like a silver highlight so it would show up. i dunno what happened but now the icon has to have a color as a background. Does anyone know how to change the background color of the icons back to clear???

thanks!

I have used a program called "transparent" for several years.
http://home.attbi.com/~jguerette/transparent/

Also, I think tweakui for XP has this feature.

I haven't tried tweakui, but "transparent" said in the ReadMe that it was for Windows 95, and 98, i think, but not for XP. Also I tried putting it in the startup menu but it never changed the icon's color... I'm gonna try tweakui sometime later i hope. Thank for your help dustyrider.

I just downloaded tweakui and installed it. I opened it and looked at all the options but I never saw where you could change the background color of the icons to clear..
If someone who is kinda familiar with tweakui could help, I'd really appreciate it.
(also, any cool extra's you can do with tweakui would be good to know)

I have XP & I run Transparent ok. Create a folder in C:\Program Files\Accessories & extract all the files there. Don't put all the files in the startup. Pick a color: for instance, I put a "shortcut" to the transparentW (White) file in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup . The "W" designates the color of the text.

I don't have C:\Program Files\Accesories... I think the way i have to get there is through documents and settings\all users\start menu\programs\accesories, i think.

if you could help me as to where to put the files, i'd appreciate it

it is my belief that the transparent text is a native option in windows xp, and you shouldn't have to download a program to do what should already be done. i have seen where if you have the "lock desktop items" option checked, that you will see the block of background color. Make certain that you do *not* have "Lock desktop items" enabled. You can find this option by going to to Display Properties, then clicking on the "Desktop" tab and clicking the "Customize Desktop" button (below the list of wallpapers). A second dialogue will appear, and you will need to click the "Web" tab and uncheck "Lock desktop items." Now your icon text should be rendered with transparent backgrounds. found this on another forum.
