You don't give the Compac model you are useing, but your motherboard is an MSI MS-6375 useing the Intel i865 chipset which is MSI model 865GVM3-V
see here for your specs http://www.msi.com.tw/program/suppor...UID=667&kind=1

You first have to update the intel INF chipset driver get it here from Intel
http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scri...4&submit=Go%21
it's No:1 in the list INF Update Utility ( INFINST AUTOL.EXE ) install and restart your comp. This needs to be installed before you install any other drivers, it loads Windows drivers.
If the Realtek sound driver is the AC'97 A3.79, that is the right one, but you will need to install again after update of the Intel chipset.Just in case here is the link to the Realtek AC'97 http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...&Software=True

Set a System Restore Point before each installation just in case.

Hope this helps

I am not sure, my uncle built it for me I think. The chasis has "Comlab" and "Intel Inside Celeron" markings but no other labels. I ran Belarc like you suggested but I don't see the make the the model on the report. Is there another way I can found out?

Belarc and Everest gave me the motherboard and the chipset info which I listed. Is there another place I can look for the make/model?

Thanks again Barb.

The SiS620 does not have intergrated sound, this means you have a sound card, if your sound connections are set away from your mouse & keyboard connections, then you most likley have a sound card. SiS imply a C-Media may be fitted, can you get this free programe, it will list all the devices on your comp, look through for any devices that indicate sound, especially C-media http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/...entifier.shtml

this is a safe site to use, you will get a long list as every driver will be listed including all Win drivers.

Hope this helps

The sound card is a Trident Microsystems 4DWAVE-DX it is available at Driversguide, you need to register first go here http://driversguide.com/ when you have registered go here
http://www.soundcard-drivers.com/companies/1072.htm yours is 3rd on the list 4DWAVE-DX the trig3d.zip for Win XP dated May 20 2003.

As always set a System restore Point just in case

Hope this helps

i just spent 30 minutes filling surveys trying to register a download site and the surveys just didn't end, ever. they check against postal records so i had to use my dad's name and our real address too. he's gonna get a lot of junk mail about garden gnomes and stuff next week.

can you suggest a place where i can download that driver for free? thanks again kindly.

Driversguide is the best site, you will get no junk mail, everyone uses it including the techi pros, if you scroll down the list you will find the file you need. There's no charge for drivers from this site.

This explains why this chipset installation is important

************************************************** **********
The Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility installs
Windows* INF files to the target system. These files outline
to the operating system how to configure the Intel(R) chipset
components in order to ensure that the following features
function properly:

- Core PCI and ISAPNP Services
- PCIe Support
- IDE/ATA33/ATA66/ATA100 Storage Support
- SATA Storage Support
- USB Support
- Identification of Intel(R) Chipset Components in
the Device Manager

just a little more information

Hope this helps
