Hi Bookworm...new user here, hoping you might be able to assist.

I have a Sony PCV-RZ16G desktop...old, but fairly robust.

1.5 Gig RAM

2.66 MHz Processor

SoundMax Integrated Audio Controller....

And it used to be Windows XP SP2.

Upgraded to Vista, and no audio at all. Says "No audio output device is installed."

I think the older SoundMax might be just tooooooo old for Vista...couldn't find any driver updates on the web.

Question: do drivers for the SoundMax for Vista exist?

Or...should I just go buy a sound card? And if I do, will that work? Or is there something intrinsically out-of-date here, that will prevent this 2002 machine from ever accepting Vista in correct form?

Thanks for your help...I really appreciate it.

same problem as everyone else i'm afraid to say!

Hi Bookworm, you have helped so many people on this forum so I now have renewed hope that you can help me to!!. I did a system recovery which killed my computer so had to reinstall windows xp but lost my graphics and sound. Got the graphics from the hp site no worries but there is nothing for sound. Tried downloading the realtec ac97 drivers and that moved my multimedia audio controller from other devices with ? & ! to sound, video & game controllers with just an !. When you check the properties it says the drivers are not installed(code 28) so I did reinstall drivers and it starts to do something and then my computer restarts about 5 secs later!. Help me please!!!
My specs are:
Windows xp home ed sp2(build 2600)
1.70 gig intel celeron
8kb primary memory cache
128 kb sec mem cache
128 kb tertiary mem cache
40.01 gb usable hard drive capacity
34.79 gb hd free space
Hp Pavilion 04 p8569A-ABG 522a 20200TG1011MPER
system serial no:KR22407822 AN300
enclosure type: other

Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast ethernet NIC
primary auto IP adress 192.168.1.2/24
gateway 192.168.1.1
dhcp server 192.168.1.1
physical address 00:40:2b:27:e6:40

Board: Intel corp NBGV-Northwood/Brookdale-G Validation Board
BIOS: Pheonix Taech LTD 6.00 05/28/2002

P.S. I also downloaded the drivers from driver.com that you recommended to someone else and it is a sys file and set up information but I'm not sure how to get it to do anything?!
Many Thanks
Pnut
