Guess what - sound issues :)

Hi,
Found this thread looking for a solution to my audio issue, which is that the multimedia audio controller has a yellow ! over it in device mgr & I get no sound but the system beep.

I have tried several of the packages suggested in this thread but have had no luck. I guess this is a Realtek AC'97 (according to everest) but the s/w installer pointed to in several of these replies crashes the whole system every time I try to install it. (latest package for XP from http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...&GetDown=false)

Anyways, below is the comp summary from everest. Sure hope someone (well I think we all know who, sound queen can help me out with this! Let me know if you need other info!

Fixed!!!!

I FINALLY found the right drivers for this after much struggling, so wanted to post the info here. It was actually another thread on these forums that had the right pointer, but it took some time for me to find it. I googled:

soundmax ac97 Intel 82801EB ICH5 - AC'97 Audio Controller [A-2/A-3] driver

That led me to:
http://www.softwaretipsandtricks.com...39-post11.html

Which led me to:
http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scri...stems&lang=eng

Which is the CORRECT driver for this audio controller. The file name, in case they move things around, is:
Audio: ADI 1985 [AUD_ALL32_5.12.1.5240_PV2.EXE]

BTW, will also add the crash info I had seen when trying to install the wrong drivers, so when someone searches that maybe they will find this thread. I was trying to install the Realtek AC97 drivers from the realtek site and my system crashed every time at the end of the install with:
STOP: 0x7E

The offending driver was portcls.sys at address 0xEDF4D46D.

Anyway, huzzah! Finally got this working. Thanks to the folks on this forum for the great info/resource!

Best,
Tim

Multimedia Audio Controller with yellow question mark also

Hi There!!

I have been searching for days on how to resolve this issue. Used the troubleshooting help in Windows and it led me to the device manager.

The multimedia audio controller has a yellow question mark beside it. Went to properties, It has some info on it:

Device lnstance ld.

PCI\VEN_1106&DEV_3059&SUBSYS_C0501297&REV_40\3&61A AA01&0&8D

Date, signer and version are unknown. How can I locate the correct driver with no other information on it?

Under General information about it, it says,

"The drivers for this device are not installed." (Code 28).

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver.

I tried to reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver. Then it takes me to an install screen to use the CD or to pick a location. I had to re-install XP then my sound didn't work anymore.

After reading the other postings about this issue, I am not sure on how to find all of the information that may be required to help resolve this.

Computer:

Windowx XP Home Edition Version 2002
Service Pack 2

AMD Athlon (TM) XP 2100+
1.74 GHz 504 MB of RAM

What other information is needed to find a driver?

Thank you for your help!!!

This is the link to your Intel D865GLC motherboard drivers http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scri...4&submit=Go%21

and your serial number leads to a Gateway 500XL comp
http://support.gateway.com/support/d...s=Windows%20XP

The Intel chipset driver is more up to date, but you may have a sound card installed, ADI Soundmax is the onboard driver,

Onboard - audio jacks near keyboard and mouse sockets on the I/O plate

Sound card - much lower down tower in an exspansion slot

Install the Intel Chipset driver first - then RESTART your comp, then install the audio driver

SET A SYSTEM RESTORE POINT BEFORE INSTALLING JUST IN CASE

Hope this helps

I appreciate the help, but i just recently had a chance to attempt your solution, however i still receive the failure error whenever i try to install the audio driver. When i attempt to manually install, just before the install finishes, I get a blue scree and my computer restarts. Any other information you may need let me know. Thanks again.
