Need help with another AC'97 problem

I recently formated and clean installed Windows XP SP2 on a HP Pavilion 510n. All works fine except for sound. In device manager, it lists:
Intel AC'97 Audio Controller-SigmaTel Codec with an explanation mark (!) and when I click properties, it says, "This device cannot start. (Code 10)"
I called HP and they were of no help and don't have the driver for this paticular model even posted. They said I have to buy some software restore CD. I did back up the C:\HP\Drivers folder before formating, but even that one doesn't solve the problem.
Here's the main specs:
HP Pavilion 04 P6317A-ABA 510n 20000TG101LOMITA
Board: Trigem Computer, Inc. Lomita
BIOS: Phoenix 3.06 12/15/2001
Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (build 2600)
Intel(R) 82801AA USB Universal Host Controller
Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC
Intel(R) 82810E Graphics Controller
NVIDIA(R) nForce(TM) MIDI UART

I know the sound used to work with the original XP Home that was factory installed on this system. I'm hoping this can be solved without buying a real sound card (which would probably be the easier solution here).

Hi there. I didn't realise this problem was so popular :P as you may have guessed i have no sound either. Have tried to find the right driver but none work. using the latest SiS 7012 audio driver sound appears to play but nothing comes out. i did the automatic update and it gave me the C-Media aC97 audio controllers driver but it came up with the yellow exclamation mark and no sound would play at all. Also tried all the obvious; volume controls, speakers etc.

here are my computer specs:

Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Professional (service pack 2)

CPU Type: AMD Athlon XP, 1100 MHz (11 x 100)

Motherboard Name: ECS K7S5A (5 PCI, 1 AGP, 1 AMR, 2 SDR DIMM, 2 DDR DIMM, Audio)

Motherboard Chipset: SiS 735

System Memory: 192 MB (SDRAM)

BIOS Type: AMI (10/01/02)

Dont know what if any of that is helpful. cheers for any help.

Set a System Restore Point before installing just in case

Your board is an MS-7093 version RS480M2
all drivers for your board are here http://www.msi.com.tw/program/suppor...UID=639&kind=1

Your Audio is Realtek AC'97 get the driver here from Realtek http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...&Software=True

Hope this helps

Set a System Restore Point just in case

A bit of digging but found at Driversguide.com http://members.driverguide.com/index.php
you will have to register, when you get there follow this path

Homepage / select Drivers tab / Sound card / choose No:4 Intel / enter model Pavilon 510n / choose Simple Search tab / one driver shown Avonce AC'97 for Via Audio Controller / it shows OS as Win 98 but this also works for Win XP.

Any problems send me a PM

Hope this helps
