Check this out, to see what is the default audio
Go to Control Panel / Sound & Audio Devices / Sound Playback – click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be something “modem line 0 playback” has been substituted for the correct audio device.

Can you get Everest, copy and paste the Computer/Sumary section, need to know the Chipset, http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/...-Edition.shtml

I tried to run Everest and it gave me an error message,

"This computer seems to have an Intel i945GM/PM "Calistoga" motherboard chipset. The Current version of EVEREST you are running does not fully support your system."

but I think it just told me what the chipset is lol
I don't have soundmax on the devices list btw..

If Device Manager is showing anything yellow flagged try installing this way
1. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the the location of downloaded driver
8. Click OK and click Next
9. Wait while the Wizard installs the software
10. Click Finish.
