Your board is an Intel 845GVSR

Set a System Restore Point before installing each driver just in case

Then go here to Intel to install the chipset driver
http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scri...5&submit=Go%21
It's No: 7 in the list INF:Intel 82801DB ICH4, install and then restart your comp.

Go here to Realtek, to get the AC'97 Audio driver ( it's more up to date than the one on the Intel site ) http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...&Software=True
this site can be slow, it's very popular

Hope this helps

Anyway, recently, I upgraded my OS to WinXP, everything seems fine except I don't have any sound. When I checked the device manager, under Other Devices, Multimedia Audio Controller had a big yellow question mark in front of it.

I tried to uninstall it in safe mode, and then restart it normally, it didn't work. When I got back on, I tried to reinstall it, but the computer couldn't find the software for the controller. u.u; So...help?

I have the same problem, can someone please help me out.

Restore the comp to before you installed both the drivers, useing the restore point you created. What make and model is your comp, let me know please.

Please follow these instructions to the letter, the INF file must be installed First and then the comp restarted, the Audio driver just needs to be installed, there is no need to restart the comp for this driver.

Cheers

Your board is an ASUS P4R800-V Deluxe

Go here to ASUS site http://support.asus.com/download/dow...Language=en-us

In top left hand corner under Download / Input Model to Search / type P4R800-V Deluxe / click link to board / select Drivers tab/ your driver is SoundMax version 5.12.3860 for Win XP second on the list.

Hope this helps

Have a look here ASUS have their own forum http://vip.asus.com/forum/index.aspx?SLanguage=en-us

Also this forum are well up in problems of this kind http://www.h-kon.net/forums/

my suspicions are the chipset may need to be updated, this is a new piece of hardware, what is Device Manager showing, any problems highlighted.

Hope this helps

Couldnt find much relevant info on the above websites and no problems showing at Device Manager.

This is the message I get as soon as Windows has loaded: "ASUS nVidia Series Shell has encountered a problem and needs to close. Error Signature. AppName: anvshell.exe ".

Through Event Manager, I got more info about the problem if it makes any sense to you:
"Faulting application anvshell.exe, version 1.0.0.1 faulting module anvioctl.dll, version 1.0.2.0"

Does this mean anything. Thanks in advance.

Wow! this thread is huge!!! I thought it was only 5 pages lol.

There is a whole lot of happy customers in here. Your doing a great job, Bookworm. I bet there has been a lot of money saved in this thread.

Just one minor thing: System Restore sometimes makes more problems than it fixes. In this case it may be a better option to roll back the driver(s) if a problem arises, before trying System Restore. Although setting a restore point before drivers are installed in still very good advice.

Keep up the good work.

Cache.

I have a large yellow question mark against multimedia audio controller, properties says "device is not configured correctly (code 1)
to reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall driver"
The properties say nothing is known about driver.

from the system information I also find this:
Multimedia Audio Controller PCI\VEN_1039&DEV_7012&SUBSYS_55101584&REV_A0\3&267 A616A&0&17 This device is not configured correctly.

Here is some info on my laptop

OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600
OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation
System Manufacturer Tiny Computers
System Model 258KA000
System Type X86-based PC
Processor x86 Family 15 Model 4 Stepping 10 AuthenticAMD ~1995 Mhz
BIOS Version/Date American Megatrends Inc. 080011, 20/09/2004
SMBIOS Version 2.3
Windows Directory C:\windows
System Directory C:\windows\system32
Total Physical Memory 1,024.00 MB

Before I go totally demented can you please tell me where to find the driver
