it may not be the right one
check these out first
Go to Control Panel / Sound & Audio Devices / Audio tab / Sound Playback – click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be something “modem line 0 playback” has been substituted for the correct audio device.
Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply > click Start > Reboot.
SET A SYSTEM RESTORE POINT BEFORE INSTALLING JUST IN CASE
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / select Create a restore point and follow instructions

Thanks a whole bunch!

similar problem.
I am having a problem similar to that listed in this thread.
I bought a Samson USB condenser mic fully believing that it would be a simple plug and play operation. I attempted to install the software and POOF my audio was gone.. the options were now darkened in the audio section of the xp control panel. I uninstalled the mic and removed the drivers. Cleaned the drivers with driver cleaner and attempted to re-install my AC97 intergrated sound. No luck, i downloaded the latest VIA drivers and the missing files i needed (kuser.dll,drmk.sys..etc) and at the end of the driver install was told that "cannot load the ac97 driver. driver may be missing". The hardware is found in the device manager however it will not load. I've always had a little bit of trouble with the AC97 sound so i decided to bit the bullet and buy a sound blaster auidgy SE. Installed the SB.. it was detected I attempted to load the drivers.. and BAM.. same thing.. "cannot load the sound blaster driver". I used CCleaner to clean the registry, I removed every bit of driver info pertaining the AC97 and the Sound blaster i could find. I checked the BIOS... nothing. I'm at my wits end here. I have a PC Chips P4M800 1.7 ghz mboad. I'm pretty sure it's a software issue and i DO NOT want to reinstall. Help. please.

Try this
Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) from the tree / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply / click Start > OK Reboot.

Check this out
Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) from the tree / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply / click Start > OK Reboot.
also try installing this way
Installing Drivers
Create a folder for what you are downloading
Example: Audio
Then download the zipped file to that folder
Then download and install Winzip
Go to the folder and right click and click Winzip extract to here
That will automatically make a folder and unzip files to it ( make a note of file path)
Then go to folder and click on Setup file and follow instructions displayed for installation
If no Setup file
1. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device ( or audio device Realtek, Soundmax etc ) and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the the location of downloaded driver
8. Click OK and click Next
9. Wait while the Wizard installs the software
10. Click Finish.

Hello. I accidently deleted something I shouldn't have from my parents computer because I was trying to get rid of a lot of the useless programs my brother who has now left home had downloaded. Now the sound no longer works. I am not very good with computers as you can probably tell by my deleting of the sound but if you could help me it would be deeply appreciated.
The computer trys to install something to do with a multimedia audio controller each time I turn it on but it fails to do so because it can't find it and it says I may need to put in the cd-rom if it came with one. I don't seem to have the right cd-rom which is why I am asking you if there is anyway you could help me get the sound back.
I am not sure where to find the information I might need to give you but if you could please get back to me with any suggestions I would be very grateful.

Bit confusing, you have 2 onboard audio drivers and a sound card showing as installed.
First where do you plug in your audio, on the I/O plate or an expansion slot, see here http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...0io%20slot.JPG
then post belarc, need the motherboard make and model

Get Belarc, copy and paste the report, omit the Software section, it gives Product Codes for your OS and the Windows Critical Updates.
