I also have the same problem. I reformatted my hard drives today, and now multimedia audio controller has no drivers and can't find them on its own. Here's what Belarc says:

Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 (build 2600)
Compaq Presario 061 PY059AA-ABA SR1550NX NA530 0nx1411RE101SALMO00
System Serial Number: MXF53108NR
AMD Athlon 64
Board: ASUSTek Computer INC. Salmon 1.04
Bus Clock: 200 megahertz
BIOS: Phoenix Technologies, LTD 3.12 04/20/2005

tell me if you need any other information; I appreciate the help.

Hope you can help me... this is becoming quite frustrating.
By the way... I couldn't get my sound to work with the standard motherboard-sound-thing, or with an additional sound card... I don't know if that affects anything.

Thanks in advance

Audio is SoundMax go here to Asus http://support.asus.com.tw/download/...Language=en-us
you sometimes have to point Win XP in the right direction to install SoundMax try this method

Installing Drivers

Create a folder for what you are downloading

Example: Audio
Then download the zipped file to that folder

Then download and install Winzip
Go to the folder and right click and click Winzip extract to here

That will automatically make a folder and unzip files to it ( make a note of file path)

Then go to folder and click on Setup file and follow instructions displayed for installation

If no Setup file

1. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device ( or audio device Realtek, Soundmax C-Media etc ) and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the the location of downloaded driver
8. Click OK and click Next
9. Wait while the Wizard installs the software
10. Click Finish.

couple of things to check

Go to Control Panel / Sound & Audio Devices / Audio tab / Sound Playback – click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be something “modem line 0 playback” has been substituted for the correct audio device.

Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply > click Start > Reboot.

Also check if onboard audio is enabled in the BIOS, it's a common factor with SiS based boards, post back if you need more assistance

Thats your Lan card not audio, Get Belarc, copy and paste the report, omit the Software section, it gives Product Codes for your OS and the Windows Critical Updates.
