This is the Conexant audio driver for your model, http://support.gateway.com/support/d...i d=175754324
not your specific model as gateway only offer a Vista driver

Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / select Create a restore point and follow instructions

no audio device found

hi bookworm,

you can add me to the list of silent pc owners.....
i have an ibm thinkpad a31, i went to the lenovo site and D/L'ed the soundmax driver but it didnt work. i tried other things before getting fed up and recovering the system. i still do not have an audio device installed.
the only things that show up in device manager are all the "codecs" and a teakcd-224ecd-rom. i do not have the volume control icon on the taskbar nor can i access anything in the sound and audio devices folder in control panel (just about everything is grayed out) but the pc does beep every now and then and i can turn the volume up and down with the side volume buttons but it doesnt look like it doing it through windows, the volume bar looks like something you'd see on a tv. any help is greatly appreciated.

Look again at device Manager under Sound, video and game controllers, expand and look for a listing that just gives sound, if we can identify the sound device we can get an updated driver.

If you can't find this information download Belarc Advisor here http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
and post the findings.

Did you get this driver http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/si...cid=MIGR-41943

check this out

Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) from the tree / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply / click Start > OK Reboot.

Try installing this way, use the If No Setup File method

Installing Drivers

Create a folder for what you are downloading

Example: Audio
Then download the zipped file to that folder

Then download and install Winzip
Go to the folder and right click and click Winzip extract to here

That will automatically make a folder and unzip files to it ( make a note of file path)

Then go to folder and click on Setup file and follow instructions displayed for installation

If no Setup file

1. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device ( or audio device Realtek, Soundmax C-Media etc ) and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the the location of downloaded driver
8. Click OK and click Next
9. Wait while the Wizard installs the software
10. Click Finish.

Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / select Create a restore point and follow instructions

ECS/RealTek Audio Drivers - No Audio Device

Barbara,

thank you for your prompt reply. Somehow it still doesn't work. I waited for a new release of drivers. I tried the most recent - now Oct 22 - and 'No Audio Device' still shows up in my Control Panel.

Any other possible idea?

Thank you so much
Paola

bookworm,

" Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) from the tree / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply / click Start > OK Reboot."

its already on automatic and started.

" 2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device ( or audio device Realtek, Soundmax C-Media etc ) and choose Update Driver"

there are no devices that're flagged. i.e. realtek, soundmax. all i have listed for devices are teak cd-224e, audio codecs, legacy audio drivers, media control devices, legacy video capture devices and video codecs
