More sound help

Bookworm....Can you take a look at my system and let me know if you have any ideas? Ive downloaded the SigmaTel driver from the dell site, and yet it doesnt work....The strange thing is my sound will work for a day, then quit for a few days. Then work again, then not. Theres a yellow "!" next to Sigmatel C-Major audio under device manager. If I uninstall and reinstall the driver it doesnt work. Im not sure what info you need, but heres a bunch:

see next post

Thanks

Set a System Restore Point before installing each driver just in case

Go here to Dell http://support.euro.dell.com/support...&os=WW1&osl=EN

First download and install the Chipset (Intel mobile chipset) then RESTART your comp

Second download and install the Audio driver

Hope this helps

Thanks, but it didnt work.

Should I be downloading stuff from the euro dell site? Im in the USA.

I found something else online to check....when I goto start/run and type sndvol32.exe, I get a "There are no active mixer devices available. To install a mixer devices, go to control panel and click add hardware" ...etc...but when I try to add hardware, I get the code 10 error.

Also, went to the f12 diagnostics and ran a test, and the sound worked fine, so I KNOW its a software issue.

Go to Control panel/sounds/volume and check "put vol ctrl on taskbar"
You can also do some testing there too and directx.
What is f12 ? please.
Dell has a diagnostic menu you can get to by pressing f12 when the PC is powered up (much like the BIOS screen). It tests my laptops audio system independent of windows and drivers. When I run the test the speakers work, but when windows loads, it doesnt work.

Volume isnt an issue. There is no volume if there is no sound. I dont have a sound device installed and doing the whole uninstall, reboot, re-install drivers, etc etc etc doesnt work. Ive tried uninstalling, then doing what bookworm recommended and it did nothing.

When I goto control panel > sounds and audio devices it says "no audio device", and theres a yellow "!" next to Sigmatel C-Major audio in my device manager. If I uninstall the device, and try to use the add new hardware wizard to add it back in, I get an error saying there was a problem adding the new hardware. When I look at the properties of the Sigmatel device in device manager, I get a "this device cannot start (code 10)"

Im starting to think I have a virus of some sort.

Haveing sound isn't automatic, you have to install the drivers that should have come with it or the card you installed.
Volume is an issue. It might be muted. You need to check the volume control in the control panel/sounds and see the settings.
Also run directx sound tests.
It seems you have not tried my first suggestions.
I did try it. I cant change anything in the control panel because it says I have no audio device when I click "Sounds and audio devices". I cant check or uncheck mute or "place volume icon in taskbar", I cant change volume, I cant change default device, cant do anything. The system has no sound. If I try to play a sound file or movie it wont play because I get a sound error (In windows media player I get this error: "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly.").

When I run the diagnostics (before windows loads), it plays a song to test the system speakers. But thats before windows loads. The test tests the speakers without windows or drivers. If sound is heard, the sound card is okay and the speakers are okay. Thats how I know its a software issue and not a hardware issue. But once windows loads, I have no sound. No sound device. The only sound I get is a beep from the motherboards internal speaker.

When I goto control panel > sound and audio devices > hardware tab, it lists the Sigmatel device, but the device properties says:

Manufacturer: Sigmatel
Location: PCI Bus 0, device 31, function 5
Device status: This device vannot start (code 10)

Ive tried uninstalling the device, reinstalling drivers I just downloaded from dell.com, rebooting, system restore, and nothing works.

It's not the same format as "xxxxxxx-xxxx-xxx", but that's what it says on the back.

Your serial number isn't shown, this could be because they are not shown prior to June 2003, but this is the SoundMax driver installed on their systems, go here to get it, choose the one for Win XP http://www.optima.com.au/downloads/d...wnloads&page=2

Hope this helps
