just one point first Your audio plugs must be on the I/O plate for this driver to work, if you use an expansion slot then you have a Sound Card installed, see here, click the image to focus
http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...0io%20slot.JPG
These are the drivers for the P4B, not the same as the P4B 266,
http://support.asus.com.tw/download/...Language=en-us
make sure you are logged in as Admin before installing
Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / select Create a restore point and follow instructions

access denied
Hello again. My audio plugs are located on the I/O drive. I downloaded the necessary driver from the website but it still did not work. I went to device manager and chose the folder to download. It showed a complete transfer of files, but then the message "an error occured during the installation of the device Acces is denied" occured again. I am the only account on this computer and I am a computer administrator. I do not understand why it would indicate that access is denied! I think this is the root of the cause, but how do i fix it. Please help if you can? Oh, Merry Christmas!!

Sound issues
I also am unable to get sound working.
I have a Sabrent 6-Channel 5.1 3D Surround Sound PCI Card, and have downloaded the drivers from Sabrent's website, I have deleted the yellow "multimedia audio controller" then installed the drivers to no avail. What am I missing?
Below is the pc info from Belarc Advisor...

I would install the Via Chipset driver, Restart your comp, then install the audio driver
Also try to install this way by making Win XP use the driver
1. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device ( or audio device Realtek, Soundmax C-Media etc ) and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the location of downloaded driver
8. Click OK and click Next
9. Wait while the Wizard installs the software
10. Click Finish.
Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / select Create a restore point and follow instructions

Hi Bookworm-
Thank you for the suggestions -- I hadn't tried reinstalling the Via chipset driver.
--I reinstalled the Via chipset driver and rebooted
--I tried adding the driver per your instructions above (providing Windows with the path to the driver) -- the ZIP file didn't include a folder called "XP", so I used the "Win_NT40" instead (other choices were Win_95, Win_98, and WDM). Even within Win_NT40, there are 2 folders with drivers -- "ALI" and "ICH". I tried both -- ALI first, and then ICH when that didn't work.
--When your suggested method didn't work, I also tried using the install program that was part of the sound driver ZIP file. That didn't work either.
So....still no success. Control Panel still shows "No Audio Device".
One other little note -- above, you said that I should right-click the "yellow-flagged device". Nothing is showing a yellow flag. Under Control Panel > Device Manager, there are no yellow flags or question marks. Everything appears to be working perfectly. The only indications that something is wrong:
--No sound is coming out of the speakers.
--Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices says there's No Audio Device
--When attempting to launch iTunes, Winamp, or other A/V programs, I'm told that there's a problem with the sound drivers.
--under Device Manager > Sound, Video, and Game Controllers > C-Media AC97 Audio Device > Properties > Audio Devices > C-Media WDM Device > Properties, it says "Status: Driver is enabled but has not been started"
Any other suggestions?
Thanks!

another update
Just for fun -- because I was tired of trying to get the onboard sound card working -- I installed an old PCI SoundBlaster sitting in my junk drawer. I disabled the onboard audio in BIOS and installed the new card. When I rebooted the system, Windows automatically detected and installed the Sound Blaster drivers. The little message down in the bottom right corner of the screen said that the new hardware was ready to use.
However...I'm still having exactly the same symptoms as before. "No Audio Device". Arrrrrrgh!
So....if the new hardware didn't fix the problem, then I'm guessing the problem doesn't have anything to do with the drivers. I'm guessing there must be some other problem...with Windows, maybe...
Back to the drawing board.
