Go to Control Panel / Sound & Audio Devices / Audio tab / Sound Playback – click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be something “modem line 0 playback” has been substituted for the correct audio device.

Probably should have mentioned this before, sorry it's been a long week. Every field in sounds and audio devices is greyed out and cannot be selected.

Tried installing the drivers last night from the add hardware wizard to no avail. It says the drivers are found now, but there is still nothing selectable in the sound playback tab.

I followed all of the steps in the link above, and was able to install the P&PSDE, but there was a yellow circle with an exclamation point in it explaining that it couldn't run because it couldn't install the necessary drivers. I tried letting it look for the drivers online, I tried pointing it to my temp directory, but every time it said it couldn't find any better match than what was already installed. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but got the same results. Technically, the Enumerator was installed, but it wasn't working because it couldn't install the necessary drivers.

Clean install time?

Try this way using your Win disc

Load win disc, then exit the program. Go to Device Manager - right click Plud & Play device - select Update Driver - No, not this time - select radio button Install Software Automatically ( recommended ) Device Manager should pick the driver from the Win disc

Check this out

Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) from the tree / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply / click Start > OK Reboot.

if still no sound, go back to Dell install the chipset driver - restart you comp - then install audio again

The usual, no sound with the yellow question mark next to multimedia audio controller.

TOSHIBA Satellite 2450 PS245A-06V6GP
System Serial Number: 53031148P
Enclosure Type: Notebook

I've tried d/ling Legacy Geforce 3, which is what I had before I formatted but it says that its not compatible with my hardware...or something along those lines....

Hi again,

This is the only driver found on the search and I've downloaded it but it won't install as it's not recognised.
Any further ideas?
