Look again at device Manager under Sound, video and game controllers, expand and look for a listing that just gives sound, if we can identify the sound device we can get an updated driver.

If you can't find this information download Belarc Advisor here http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
and post the findings.

need more info, make and model of comp or Get Belarc, copy and paste the report, omit the Software section, it gives Product Codes for your OS and the Windows Critical Updates.

Ah, thanks. But I've been getting errors unfortunately:

1) Cannot open key errors (quite a few of them pop up with a system beep)
2) When I installed this driver at an earlier date, it closed the installer and a "No Driver!" message was displayed.

Any suggestions?

Thanks again.

try installing this way, use the If No Setup File method

Installing Drivers

Create a folder for what you are downloading

Example: Audio
Then download the zipped file to that folder

Then download and install Winzip
Go to the folder and right click and click Winzip extract to here

That will automatically make a folder and unzip files to it ( make a note of file path)

Then go to folder and click on Setup file and follow instructions displayed for installation

If no Setup file

1. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device ( or audio device Realtek, Soundmax C-Media etc ) and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the location of downloaded driver
8. Click OK and click Next
9. Wait while the Wizard installs the software
10. Click Finish.

Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / select Create a restore point and follow instructions

same problem

Hello,

Sorry for the lack of variety but I too have the same problem as the rest of this thread. I was trying to sort or remove my realnetworks installer but seem to ave uninstalled a realtek sound driver. Now I've got a big yellow questionmark in device manager for multimedia audio controller. For sound, video and game controllers i've only got 'audio codecs, legacy audio drivers, legacy video capture devices, media control devices, video codecs'. I've already been on the Acer website & downloaded Reaktek AC'97 audio driver (APSPAUDIO.EXE), intalled & restarted but it hasn't made any difference & I still have no sound. I ran Belarc and its results are:

"Operating System System Model

I've tried the advice you gave the last poster, HBalexander, on updating the drivers but when I do this I can only select one folder in those into which Realtek AC'97 was installed Acer/audio/wdm (won't give me the option to click ok for the others) and this still gives me the result "the hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software"

Thanks for any advice you can give

Allan

check these out

Go to Control Panel / Sound & Audio Devices / Audio tab / Sound Playback – click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be something “modem line 0 playback” has been substituted for the correct audio device.

Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply > click Start > Reboot.

if still no audio try the driver from realtek
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...tDown=false#AC

Tick I accept the above – wait till site resets then click Next

Download the (Executable file) save to desktop, double click downloaded file on desktop to install
