Any suggestions?

Thanks again.

first Your audio plugs must be on the I/O plate for this driver to work, if you use an expansion slot then you have a Sound Card installed, see here, click the image to focus
http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...0io%20slot.JPG

if they are on the I/O plate you need to check the BIOS to see if audio is set to [Auto] here's how

as soon as comp boots press the <Delete> key
Main menu opens http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...-MX%20Main.JPG

use arrow key to go to Advanced menu
http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...20Advanced.JPG

use down arrow to go to PCI Configuration - press Enter
http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...I%20Config.JPG

use down arrow key to go to Onboard PCI Devices Control - press Enter
http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...%20devices.JPG

use down arrow key to Onboard AC'97 Audio Controller - should be set to [Auto] if [Disabled] use + key to set to [Auto]

press F10 key to Exit & Save changes

y to accept changes

XP will then load

install audio driver again

Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / select Create a restore point and follow instructions

I tried this but the sound playback menu, and all other on the audio pane, were all greyed out saying no playback device.

I'm just about to try this. I'll let you know how it goes. I take it that the driver to use is: Windows 98Gold/98se/Me/2000/XP/2003(32/64 bits) for Driver only. For Windows 98 SE, DirectX(R)8 is required to enable advanced features. (Executable file)

Thanks Bookworm.

Unhappy

Hello, this is my first post here at ST&T.

First of all, I have no sound card, it had got taken out, but I should still have a Windows Audio Device. I have tried the Realtek AC97 audio driver and the Realtek High Definition audio driver, both have failed to install an audio device. I have checked the Windows Audio service, it is running. After going to my audio devices from CP, it is all greyed out as well. Please help. I read in one of your earlier posts about getting Everest and pasting the Computer Summary. Well here's mine:
