Install this way, you need to tell XP to use the driver
make a note of path to where unzipped audio files are stored
1. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device ( or audio device Realtek, Soundmax C-Media etc ) and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the location of downloaded driver
8. Click OK and click Next
9. Wait while the Wizard installs the software
10. Click Finish.
Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / select Create a restore point and follow instructions

check these
Go to Control Panel / Sound & Audio Devices / Audio tab / Sound Playback – click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be something “modem line 0 playback” has been substituted for the correct audio device.
Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply > click Start > Reboot.
Are your audio plugs on the I/O plate or in a expansion slot, see here, click image to focus

Ok I tried this as well, I was doing it with a lot of hope and faith, until Windows yet again failed me.
Here's a couple screenshots of my failure:

Help
I've been having a problem with my sound as others in this thread regarding "Multimedia Audio Controller." Before I reinstalled my Windows XP Home Edition, the sound was working fine until I accidentally unplugged the audio wire in the back of the pc (Had same OS installed at the time). I plugged the wire back in and since then, i've been experiencing no sound at all. At startup, I get a black screen telling me there is a PCI conflict. I tried reinstalling codecs/drivers from HP's site, but no luck. Hope you guys can help me. Thanks in advance.

Installing Drivers
Create a folder for what you are downloading
Example: Audio
Then download the zipped file to that folder
Then download and install Winzip
Go to the folder and right click and click Winzip extract to here
That will automatically make a folder and unzip files to it ( make a note of file path)
Then go to folder and click on Setup file and follow instructions displayed for installation
If no Setup file

Thanks for the advice, I tried downloading some of the Realtek AC97 Device Drivers and my computer keeps crashing- getting the blue screen of death and then restarting. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Are your audio plugs on the I/O plate or in a expansion slot, see here, click image to focus

Hello! Under the Control Panel / Sound & Audio Devices / Audio tab / Sound Playback , only the "modem line 0 playback" can be selected. There's no other media device.
Under the Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services/Windows Audio service, it is already shown as automatic.
The audio plugs are on the I/O plate. Is it still way to fix it? Really thanks so much!!
