Well - I was willing to bet that the driver installation would work - it seemed to work for everyone else. But, Alas, i installed and rebooted, and my speakers are still not working. And when I open the Sounds from the control panel, it is still showing no speakers, and the "Modem 0" from before. I've been told by several to dump and get a new machine - but this emachine has worked so well for me - I don't have the $$or the time to put into getting something new (not to mention the loading of software, etc. - including xp, cause I hate vista and can't buy all new software) --- is there anything else I can do? I also had to replace the power, and when the geek squad gave it back to me the devices were all gone - the usb's are working, but somehow none of the devices are recognized. I'd say the two sound related, except I lost the sound several weeks ago, long before the power.

If there is anything I can do, let me know. Thanks!

I have the D2046 - things I have changed: Upgraded the hard drive, added a second hard drive. I also have (the USB not recognized now, which were fine right up until the Geek Squad swapped out my power): 2 external hard drives, scanner, HP 2600 printer, and smaller stuff like the MP3, camera hook-up, PDA.

I think something must have re-set when they changed the power. But that doesn't explain the sound. I do think a file is missing, but I can't figure out which one (Norton 360 wiped out the licensing info for QB, and that was a mess to get fixed, which still isn't exactly right -and this all happened within a two-week period, Quickbooks was lost, then the dvd burner, then the sound).

Anyway - if i could get the sound back - I have a post on another thread regarding the USB connections.

You need to go into the BIOS and enable the USB Controller and the Audio, all commands are done using the keyboard, arrows keys to select - here's how - print them off

As soon as comp boots press the <Del> this screen opens - click image to focus
http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...IOS%20Main.JPG

use down arrow to go to Integrated Peripherals - press Enter
http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...nte%20Perp.JPG

USB Controller should show [Enabled]
AC'97 Audio should show [Auto]

if they don't use arrow key to highlight and use the + key to change

when set correct press the F10 key to Save & Exit

y to accept changes

XP will load

your audio driver is here http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4400.html
pick a site to download from

Download, save to desktop, double click downloaded

The site is slow

Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / select Create a restore point and follow instructions

Did all that - the sound is still gone. But now the audio tab shows "Modem #1 Line Playback" and "Modem #1 Line Record" where it used to say "0". Still no other selections. I did disconnect all the devices connected to the USB ports, and will shut down, then connect one and see if I can just get the printer, at least, to show up... but I think I did this yesterday. I have tried reinstalling the drivers from the restore CD, but that did not help.

I feel like I'm missing something here. There are a lot of things listed under sound (legacy, codecs, etc.) - and I know enough to be dangerous. that's what I know.

Your audio plugs must be on the I/O plate for this driver to work, if you use an expansion slot then you have a Sound Card installed, see here, click the image to focus
http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...0io%20slot.JPG

Install No:7 the Intel INF driver - then restart your comp
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/filt...4&submit=Go%21

install the USB2 drivers from here http://www.e4allupgraders.info/dir1/...ownloads.shtml

then install audio again

Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / select Create a restore point and follow instructions

I think the model is FUJITSU SIEMENS D1875

check this Control Panel / Sounds & Audio Devices / Audio tab / Sound Recording - is the device shown the same as Sound Playback - if not use the dropdown arrow to see if it is available to be selected.

Still not working - but I"m not sure I did everything correctly. The zip file for the usb driver (I have 5 USB ports on my machine) is just the file. It doesn't "install" anything. So I wasn't sure what to do with it. I couldn't figure out how to select it, so I just copied it over. Reinstalled the sound driver. I don't understand why the system says the USBs are working properly - but no peripherals plugged into them are recognized.

For the Sound - in Device Manager, under Sound I have listed:
Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Media Contro Devices
Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device
Video Codecs
Video Codecs
Video Codecs

I don't know why there is duplication - when I open the Audio Codecs, the Properties tab shows:
imaadp32.acm
msadp32.acm
msg711.acm
msgsm32.acm
tssoft32.acm
msg723.acm
Windows Media Audio
Sipro Lab Telecom Audio Codec
Indeo Audio Software

When I look at the properties for each of these, they are numbered and listed in order (imaadp32.acm has priority 1, and so on).

Should I remove all the sound files - and reinstall? And do the same for the USB?

I'm at my wit's end here. I want sound - but now I have the USB issue, and that's how my printer connects (among other things). I'm kind of dead in the water if I can't print reports for clients.

Tnx for help bookworm, tried that, there was selected usb camera, so I changed to the same as Sound playback - "Sigmatel C-Major Audio", but with no effect, the microphone doesn't work . Another detail, I don't know if this is of any use to u but just in case... when I go to Control Panel / Sounds & Audio Devices / Audio tab / Sound Recording / Volume, there is microfone ticked. then if I go to advanced, there are 2 scales for Bass and Treble but they are grey, I mean they can't be changed. Hope this would be some usefull info. If u have any ideeas pls tell me how can I fix it. Tnx a million

I am trying to locate instructions for uninstalling the USB ports, in case it isn't as simple as doing the uninstall through device manager. My thought is, if I uninstall and then reboot - the PC will recognize that there are ports, and then ask to reinstall.

I'm thinking this will work. And then the PC will recognize my peripherals.

Have not figured out how to uninstall the sound (built in, not a card) - other than deleting the files I previously mentioned are under "Audio Codecs". I don't know if the PC will be able to go out and find all those files.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

If you have a win XP disc
Try a System File Check go to Run – type “sfc /scannow” (without the quotes and note space after sfc) have Win disc available in case sfc needs to replace or repair any files. The program runs with no alerts and then closes.
