You should reboot then install. You need to check the bios for the modem.

REinstalled AC'97 , and rebooted - windows XP reloaded the Unimodem - and now I'm right back where I was.

Would it help to remove the software files I listed in my 2nd to last post? Or,again, I"m afraid, should I just reformat and start all over?

I have one guy I can call - but I don't know him that well - and I don't like people messing with my system...

I'm more concerned now about not having access to any of my devices. The sound is secondary. Should I unplug, reboot, then uninstall the USBs, and start from scratch, pluggin in one device at a time?

I'm just really frustrated.

You didn't follow my advice:
Quote:

Options are getting very thin.

I think you need to consider the possibility the mainboard has a problem. You said earlier that the psu blew up, your dvd drive burned out.
If the usb controllers are present, but not working ports, it's a possibility. You should have at least some sort of operation from them.

Check the bios for modem USB and sound. Disable the modem

Your advice wasn't there at 11pm last night to follow.

I've rebooted 3x and I can't get into the bios - i keep hitting the esc key, but it continutes to boot/load. I'll have to make a call and see if I can get the guy to come to my house - I"ll tell him it may be the motherboard.

Unfortunately, I don't have time to be doing this. My job interferes with my free time.

I've tried everything (I went into the bios to check something else, but not today to turn off the modem) at least once, some cases twice.

Don't know what starting from scratch would be - and maybe it's the order I'm doing them.

Any way, I'll have to find out how much this is going to cost. I may be reduced to using my lap top to bridge - I can't afford a new machine, or much else. Especially after paying $140 for the power unit.

mixer devices

Theres a problem with my sound device. I'm new to this and i have no idea what to do or how to fix it.
Everytime i play a song on Window meadia player this box comes up and its says.

"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly."

and my volume control is not working aswell.
it says. There is no active mixer device available. To install mixer devices go to control panel, click Printer and other hardware and then click add hardware.

which i have tried everything and still no improvement. I think there's no sound device install. And i do not know how to do that. Friends said do window update and update my driver. Couldn't do that, because it say my computer is up to date. But i don't know what to do.

i'm using window xp home edition.

please help me, i'm so confused

Check modem is not active in the bios. (unless you need it)
To enter bios, "DEL" key is most used key, sometimes "F2".

Though it's not what you want to hear, drop Emachines. They are crap. $140 to replace a poor excuse for a PSU that probably damaged your mainboard in the first place, and no doubt helped ruin your optical, is a complete ripoff.
If it comes to it, Instead of paying them, get a cheap mainboard that will suit your existing components. CPU memory etc. You will be better of in monetary terms without a doubt.

Could it be the CMOS battery, or the Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator, what do you think. It's the Award BIOS perhaps Load Optimized Defaults would help, just a thought.

You don't list your OS if XP check this
Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) from the tree / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply / click Start > OK Reboot.

audio is Realtek HD go here http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...&GetDown=false

Tick I accept the above – wait till site resets then click Next

Download the (Executable file) save to desktop, double click downloaded file on desktop to install

The site is slow

Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / select Create a restore point and follow instructions
