The model is D410.
It does say Clevo

Any ideas on the driver?

Set a System Restore Point before installing driver just in case

Then go here to Clevo, your model D410 has two versions but the driver for each is the same http://www.clevo.com.tw/download/ftp...=3&submit=+GO+

Hope this helps

I have to reboot and enter safe mode so I can uninstall soundmax and then disable Bios integrated sound in order to boot up.

OS: Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (build 2600)
Main Circuit Board: Board: Dell Computer Corp. 0F5949 A01
Serial Number: ..CN7082154260OI.
Bus Clock: 400 megahertz
BIOS: Dell Computer Corporation A05 12/02/2003

Display: Intel(R) 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller [Display adapter]

Multimedia None detected (because I have integrated sound disabled)

Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC

Both SMBUS controller and Soundmax integrated digital audio are using the same IRQ (IRQ3). I am now logged on with integrated sound enabled but soundmax integrated digital audio disabled within my device manager.

I have downloaded Analog Devices ADI 198x Integrated Audio and Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility from Dell.com. I am currently out of waranty and without a paddle.

What make and model is your Dell please

Cheers

My (Windows XP home) laptop's stopped playing sounds, and in device manager it's got the yellow exclamation mark of doom next to the Multimedia Audio Controller.

I think I have the right disc to reinstall the drivers... it certainly starts doing something. It says it's found drivers for the Realtek AC'97 and starts transfering files. Everything seems to go well and the green progress bar apparently reaches 100% (the last thing I can catch it transfering is audio3d.dll to c\windows\system32) but then it says:

There was a problem installing this hardware:
Multimedia Audio Controller

An error occurred during the installation of this device.
Access is denied.

It only then allows me to close the wizard. Any ideas?! Thanks a lot in advance.

Cheers,
Tom

I did what you suggested and nothing happens other than what I explained. I tried to install the audio driver's from dell.com after applying inf update and I am faced with the same problem. My comp. freezes up while intalling drivers. Either at ksolay.ax or edcrypt.dll. I apologise for any inconvenience this problem must have caused, but I am currently up S#%t's creek with no sound I guess that's the testosterone talking for me. I would greatly appreciate any other suggestion. I have exhausted everything I know, other than purchasing an add-on sound card.

I currently have an integrated sound card.

I have downloaded your suggested software and nothing has been pointed out other than what I have mentioned on previous posts. The only thing that has an exclamation point surrounded by a triangle is my multimedia audio controller. I proceed with install and I am still faced with my system crashing. I then try to reboot and it freezes on the winxp knightrider screen. I could install driver in safe mode but it still freezed on boot up. I am stunned by your accurate and prompt replies, but nothing has resolved itself up to this point. I am very grateful for your time on this matter and would appreciate any other suggestions. "Cheers!".... as you would say.

This is under safe mode and with an old sound card installed ES1370. It doesn't matter what multimedia controller is installed, the system will continue to freeze at winxp startup. I can't configure IRQ'S within device manager because of acpi.

IRQ 0 System timer OK
IRQ 1 PC/AT Enhanced PS/2 Keyboard (101/102-Key) OK
IRQ 3 Ensoniq AudioPCI (ES1370), PCI (WDM) OK
IRQ 3 Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM SMBus Controller - 24C3 OK
IRQ 4 Communications Port (COM1) OK
IRQ 5 Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB2 Enhanced Host Controller - 24CD OK
IRQ 6 Standard floppy disk controller OK
IRQ 7 Printer Port (LPT1) OK
IRQ 8 System CMOS/real time clock OK
IRQ 9 Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C7 OK
IRQ 10 Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C4 OK
IRQ 11 Intel(R) 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller OK
IRQ 11 Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C2 OK
IRQ 11 Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC #2 OK
IRQ 12 Microsoft PS/2 Mouse OK
IRQ 13 Numeric data processor OK
IRQ 14 Primary IDE Channel OK
IRQ 15 Secondary IDE Channel OK
