Hello, I really need some help, and to repeat what everyone else has already said, I had to reinstall XP Pro, and now my sound is gone, and there's a big yellow question mark next to "Multimedia Audio Controller" in my device manager...
My boyfriend had the computer custom made and knows nothing about it, so it's pretty frustrating to find information about it. I downloaded a program called "Everest Home Edition" and it gave me some information on it, and even the driver I supposedly need for my computer... I have located that driver, but cannot get it to install on my computer... any kind of input would be greatly appreciated. Here are the computer details that "Everest" gave me:

I think this is everything, it was kind of awkward to copy and paste, so let me know if you need anything else. Thanks so much!

Dear Bookworm,
read practicaly all the threads and tried most of your tips so far.
I'm experiencing the same problem with my Multimedia audio conroller after formatting my HD and re-installing windows XP professional.
I've installed my drivers the exact same way i did the first time i got the computer but with no luck.
Tried downloading the recent drivers from Realtek but the problem persists.
I've also downloaded "Realtek ALC883 Audio Driver V5.10.0.5404 for Windows 2000/XP & 64bit XP.(WHQL)" from the Asus site incase that might help my problem but it didn't - it only offered an older version of the same driver i installed already.
Here's a post of my Blearc Advisor profile summary:

Operating System
Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (build 2600)

Main Circuit Board b
Board: ASUSTeK Computer INC. M2A-VM HDMI 1.XX
Bus Clock: 200 megahertz
BIOS: Phoenix Technologies, LTD ASUS M2A-VM HDMI ACPI BIOS Revision 1501 10/26/2007

Multimedia
Realtek High Definition Audio

I'm kind of losing hope on fixing it myself so i would very much appreciate your help.

Thanks

check these out

Check Control Panel/ Sound & Audio Devices/ Audio tab/ Sound Playback click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be they something like "modem line 0 playback" might have been substituted for the proper audio device

Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) from the tree / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply / click Start > OK Reboot

check Device Manager / System Devices / is the Microsoft Universal Audio Architecture showing as being installed
