Heres Snippets from the report:

Operating System
Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (build 2600)

System Model
Dell Computer Corporation Dimension 4600
System Service Tag: GJ9291S (support for this PC)
Chassis Serial Number: GJ9291S
Enclosure Type: Mini-Tower

Main circut board
Board: Dell Computer Corp. 02Y832
Serial Number: ..CN481113A900HY.
Bus Clock: 533 megahertz

Multimedia Audio Controller
SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio
( i downloaded the soundax thing but that gives me no audio)

Please tell me if you need anything else,

thanks in advance,

Tim

there are 4 drivers at Dell http://support.euro.dell.com/support...&catid=&impid=

soundmax is onboard - the others are sound cards - soundmax will only work if your audio plugs are on the I/O plate - see here
http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...0io%20slot.JPG

if your audio plugs are in an expansion slot then you need one of the Sound Blaster drivers, if you are not sure which one you have get Everest copy the Computer / Summary section and paste here - leave out the De-Bug PCI section

your help is greatly appreciated!

first this driver will only work if your audio plugs are on the I/O plate - see here http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...0io%20slot.JPG

if they are on the I/O plate then check that audio is set to Auto in the BIOS this is how

as soon as comp boots press the F2 key - the Main menu opens
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26...P4i65Gmain.jpg

use right arrow key to Select Advanced menu
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26...5GAdvanced.jpg

use down arrow to select Chipset Configuration - Press Enter key
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26...hipsetconf.jpg

Onboard AC'97 audio should be set to Auto

if not - use down arrow key to select - then use + key to change to Auto

press F10 key to Save & Exit

y key to accept changes

XP will load

if at any time you wish to Exit the BIOS press the Esc key

install audio driver again

Set a System Restore Point before installing just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore – click radio button Create a restore point and follow instructions
