try a system file check go to Run - type "sfc /scannow" (without the quotes and note the space after sfc) - have the xp disc available in case sfc needs to repair or replace any files

what is Device manager showing, anything yellow flagged at all

there are 4 drivers at Dell http://support.euro.dell.com/support...&catid=&impid=

soundmax is onboard - the others are sound cards - soundmax will only work if your audio plugs are on the I/O plate - see here

if your audio plugs are in an expansion slot then you need one of the Sound Blaster drivers, if you are not sure which one you have get Everest copy the Computer / Summary section and paste here - leave out the De-Bug PCI section

if they are on the I/O plate then check that audio is set to Auto in the BIOS this is how

as soon as comp boots press the F2 key - the Main menu opens

Onboard AC'97 audio should be set to Auto

if not - use down arrow key to select - then use + key to change to Auto

XP will load

Having the exact same problem, recently reinstalled Windows XP and it has left me with no sound. Went through the troubleshoot but that didn't help. If anyone could help I would be a happy larry again
