Unhappy Sound card help for outdated PC from New Zealand!

Hi Bookworm,
I hope you can help me with my sound card woes. I have been trying unsuccessfully to restore my audio for the past two weeks after a clean reinstall of XP. Did the usual things Googling up a storm and installing C-Media and Realtek drivers to see which one works. Those LOLcats are laughing at me saying "Ur doing it wrong".

It's a fairly old system (iMedia M207) which Packard Bell does not seem to support anymore.

Anyways, here's my system setup as generated by Belarc:

System Model
Packard Bell NEC P200166678
System Serial Number: 2475177177
Chassis Serial Number: 50424E
Enclosure Type: Desktop

Display

Packard Bell NEC CI A727 [Monitor] (15.7"vis, s/n 102292783019, September 2003)

Bus Adapters

Multimedia

this is your board, audio is Soundmax, suggest restoring to before installation of any of the drivers you have tried, then install the chipset driver - RESTART comp, then install audio driver or if you check the Utility tab then you can use the MSI update facility, it will show drivers you need and links to install, I would avoid the BIOS update

one other point, your antivirus and firewall ( especially if a motherboard firewall ) can cause problems installing, after downloading the drivers, turn off internet connection, antivirus and firewall if not using the windows firewall. Don't forget to turn back on before using internet.

don't forget the Restore Point

don't forget the Restore Point.

I'm seriously confused.

I've tried installing every driver i've been recommended. None has made any difference. There is no problem in Device Manager, it says it's working properly.

Does this mean it could be a physical problem? I really don't want to have to open up my computer and look, if i mess this one up i don't have one.

check this out

Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) from the tree / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply / click Start > OK Reboot

and this

Check Control Panel/ Sound & Audio Devices/ Audio tab/ Sound Playback click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be they something like "modem line 0 playback" might have been substituted for the proper audio device

if this doesn't work need more info, make ,model or motherboard if not sure get Belarc, copy and paste the report but leave out the software license and win update section
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
