looks like a sound card installed Creative Audigy SE (SB0570) Sound Card

are your audio plugs in an expansion slot or in the I/O plate - look here
http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...0io%20slot.JPG

check this too see if creative or sound blaster audigy is set as default audio
Check Control Panel/ Sound & Audio Devices/ Audio tab/ Sound Playback click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be they something like "modem line 0 playback" might have been substituted for the proper audio device

Thank you Barbara,
I tried everything but still no sound,
@On the audio tab i have no choice is all grayed out, and no playback device is what i read,
@On services local, the windows audio service was automatic, so no changes were made,
BUT what i found out is there are 4 system board icons there, that said NO DRIVERS ARE INSTALLED FOR THIS DEVICE,
Can you please tell me what to do next pleaseee
THANK YOU

I hate to post this because there are so many pages to this thread already but I too am also having an audio controller problem.
If anyone could help me find the required drivers, It would really be appreciated.

I believe the pertinent information is:

Intel (R)
Pentium (R) 4 CPU 2.40 GHz

I'm running windows xp with Service Pack 2.

Thanks!

Hi, I've been having the same problem as the others. I just reformatted my computer, and installed the intel chipset driver. There is still the yellow question mark next to multimedia audio controller. I have searched the Dell site and this thread looking for the answer, but I can't find it. I would greatly appreciate if you can help.

My information as per Belarc:

Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 (build 2600)

System Model: Dell Inc. Dimension XPS Gen 3
System Service Tag: 3CPFZ51 (support for this PC)
Chassis Serial Number: 3CPFZ51
Enclosure Type: Mini-Tower

Processor: 3.40 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4
16 kilobyte primary memory cache
1024 kilobyte secondary memory cache

Main Circuit Board:
Board: Dell Inc. 0K3464
Serial Number: ..CN4811148L0123.
Bus Clock: 800 megahertz
BIOS: Dell Inc. A02 08/23/2004

The strange thing is, I have the resourceCD that came with the computer, but it doesn't list the multimedia audio controller driver. Last time I reformatted my computer all I needed to do what put the CD in, click that and it was fine, but now it's not there. Thanks for your time.

Ok, so I got it figured out. I hope this can help anyone else out, as I know I read somewhere that a couple people had a resource CD, but it wasn't detecting sound device. So what I did was uninstall multimedia audio controller in device manager. Then I installed service pack 3, ala windows update site. When I did the mandatory reboot, it said new hardware found, multimeda audio controller. So I assume, something in service pack 3 allowed the detection of the hardware. Doesn't make sense but that's what happened.

So anyway now that I knew the hardware was being detected for sure, I put the resource cd back in, and it installed the driver. It installed automatically from the new hardware found screen which is the same as device manager update screen. I'm not exactly sure how it happened, but the combination of "uninstalling" the non existant hardware in device manager, the yellow question mark, and installing service pack 3 let window recognize the hardware.

Note: all this was from a fresh reformatting of my computer.

Now it's gone again. Sound was working perfectly. Then I installed some windows updates and it's not working again. I don't know if the two are connected, but I was getting the startup noise, the shutdown noise, music was working now it's all gone. The only thing that is still there, which makes me confused is the startup noise begins, and then abruptly stops. Now I'm really stressed because I had the problem fixed and it's back again.

Now I think I figured it out...again. I really hope it stays this time, and I hope others can learn from my mistakes. I figured maybe the windows updates were incompatible with the actual sound card drivers I had, so I just installed the newest version of audigy 2 drivers and now it works. So if sound every abruptly goes away as I've read has happened to many people, perhaps it's a windows automatic update that is incompatible, try dling the newest sound card driver.
