I have the same problem - but I have 4 devices that aren't working:
Multimedia Audio Controller (((only one I'm concerned with right now)))
Network Controller
PCI Modem
Video Controller (VGA Compatible)

Anyway - I used Belarc - and got this:

check this too see if creative or sound blaster audigy is set as default audio
Check Control Panel/ Sound & Audio Devices/ Audio tab/ Sound Playback click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be they something like "modem line 0 playback" might have been substituted for the proper audio device

I know I have it in the right slot what I cant find are the drivers for it

when i click update driver for multimedia audio controller = the device manager finds me a driver - that is not passing the microsoft verify testing logo .......

the report is only showing the chipset, need the board.Get Everest / copy and paste the Computer – Summary section. Leave out the Debug –PCI section.http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/...-Edition.shtml

Set a System Restore Point before installing just in case

still no audio

thanks for the for the effort bookworm, but I've already tried the official asus website and the motherboard cd as well, after attempting to install the driver various times it always came out as :the audio driver was undetected
these are my computer settings with the everest home edition report:

Hi I'm having a similar problem after reinstalling windows xp, spent a few hours trying to solve the problem but I'm not getting anywhere when I stumbled upon this site!

Same sound problem!

Hey, im having the same, very frustrating, problem with the sound on my computer. I think i managed to uninstall my sound software (?) and now i keep getting a message about multimedia audio controller. Please can you help? After looking over a few of the other posts i think ive got the info you need -
