Just a quick question, how does one find the drivers that they need for their computer? I posted a question earlier and I would hate to think its really simple and I could find it if I had a minute and the correct information.

Exclamation Barbara, CQ CQ CQ! :)

Hi again Barbara, aka 'bookworm,' the Sound Queen

How are you? I'm so happy to see you here. I'm having a 'no sound' problem again, but this time it's not due to reformatting or reinstalling XP.

I'm still on the Dell Dimension 4700 which you helped restore sound to in March of 2007. In November of 2008 When my monitor went up in smoke (literally) I switched to my laptop until I could replace the monitor. Recently, I bought an 22-inch ACER flat panel monitor from newegg.com (MNTR ACER|LCD 22" 5MS DVI AL2216WBD) and set it up.
It works fine except there's no sound.

Since there are no built-in speakers like my previous Dimension monitor, I went into Device Manager and enabled the Multimedia Audio Controller. However, upon checking, I saw that there was a yellow question mark re the MAC, (it needs a driver) and thus the Device Manager could not update the driver.

Here's the number for the MAC:

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_266E&SUBSYS_01811028&REV_03\3&172 E68DD&0&F2

I tried using the XP OS reinstallation disc which DELL had mailed me last time, but it could not find an update either. I even found our old thread and used the DELL link you provided then, but to no avail. The page was gone and the driver I finally did download did not work. I used System Restore to reset it back, as you had advised.

So I've run out of options now, except to bother you again - I hope you can help me restore the sound on this pc, because I now use Skype for most of my phone calls and so it's even more important to have sound.

Thanks again for your time and consideration.

cheers,
zenmoonstar

ps. Here's Belarc Profile readout (with only part of the apps, Creative is included)

pps. I haven't yet checked the Bios (forgot how to do that - it is F11? or going into F8 - i.e. safe mode? )

Thanks anyway!

Thanks any for the help but I was able to use Compaq's online self help support to fix my issue. All I had to do was downlaod and reinstall the drivers for my sound card.

hey its me again... umm i tried to follow your instructions but i guess i must have done something wrong. after i installed the realtek ac97 and restarted my computer found a new modem a new pci controler and something else that im not sure how to get rid of. and when i tried to update the realtek driver i followed your instructions and i was told my computer could not find a better match than the software i already have installed. i tried installing the conexant driver directly and that didnt work either. im stumped. please help

no sound here also..

after d/l the latest MS Windows Updates tonite... I rebooted and got a series of error messages that stated installing new hardware..then Multimedia Audio Controller not found.... checked the Device Mgr.. Multimedia Audio Controller is listed under 'Other Devices' with yellow mark next to it...noticed I now had NO SOUND..

tried going back to Gateway Support site.. installed all the sound driver updates.. used my Gateway Drivers CD that came with it.. couldn't find the driver on it ...

ANY idea what I could do... can't seem to find the driver for this mystery device anywhere... any help much appreciated..

what are the devices with no drivers ?

try a System File check

go to Run - type "sfc /scannow" (without the quotes and note the space after sfc) - have the xp disc available in case sfc needs to repair or replace any files

first try a System Restore to before the XP update - if not possible try to Restore to before you installed the audio drivers.

before I send you to Intel can you give the model or serial number for your gateway comp
