Multimedia Audio Controller
Hi Bookworm,
I surely appreciate that someone lke yourself is online helping us out. It took me a while on Google but I finally found my way to you.
Like so many others, I was cleaning up my C Drive and lost sound, with all the same symptoms described in many of the previous posts here.
Here is my belarc info:

System Serial Number: N625B H10 27715

this is what Intel say
this is what Intel say,
# Re-enable audio in BIOS:
* During boot, enter the BIOS setup by pressing F2.
* Enable audio on the Advanced > Peripheral Configuration menu.
* Press F10 to Save and Exit.
# Restart the system and cancel any “new hardware found” messages.
# Install the latest audio driver.
# Restart the system.
these are the menus
http://download.intel.com/support/mo...bymenu_v10.pdf
F2 opens Main menu
use arrow keys to select Advanced menu - press Enter
select Peripheral Configuration menu - press Enter
intel don't show the legacy section but look at these -
http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...20Bios%201.JPG
http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...%202%20ADV.JPG
http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...Perp%20Con.JPG
the legacy give you the keys to change the settings, they are either on the side or the bottom
the ESC key returns you to a previous menu and eventually the EXIT
if you find audio disabled, then Enable and use the F10 key to Save & Exit
then the y key to accept changes
I would print off the Intel pages and this, the best way is to make a note of all you do

I am running out of idea. I am currently about to install the CMI9880 driver to see if that helps. Also, is installing the INtel chipset the first thing you generally want to do? If anyone could help me, I am a novice and would appreciate any feedback. This is the best site I could find by far after hours of searching

This is a very common problem, you'd think someone wouldve found an automatic fix for these.Anyway Im like everyone else, can you help me out Bookworm.....PS,I formatted and reinstalled WinXP using an OEM disc which was from another computer cos I couldnt find the original OEM(recovery) CD for this one.The OEM Disc I used was WinXP SP1 and I installed SP2 then SP3 before finding out there was no sound.I then installed 'Realtek AC'97' from the HP website.Im not sure if my problem is the same as others because I do not get any errors, although I initially got 3 yellow question marks after completing installation of Windows in 'Device Manager'-they were VGA driver,Multimedia audio and SM Bus controller.I installed these (which I hope I got the correct ones) but I still dont get sound.Ive tried booting from a Live CD(Ubuntu) and there is no sound using that either and yes-audio is enabled in BIOs.The audio input is on the I/O plate.
