Hey bookworm, I have speakers set up but no sound comes out. Sound DOES however come out of my USB headphones. I know the speakers work fine, so it must be a computer problem. There is something wrong with my Multimedia Audio Controller, as I looked under Device Manager and it had a yellow exclamation mark next to it.

Here is my Belarc information:

However I went into the device manager and fixed some problems. Now my PC 'plays' video and audio files but there's no sound at all and the only device I have that's still "unfixable" is the Multimedia Audio Controller. I used the support CD that came with my PC but it fails to find the hardware to fix the problem, (can't find the drivers). Can anyone help, it'd be much appreciated.

I used the Baleric Scanner here to give a listing of my Hardware. Thanks again to anyone who can be of assistance.

install this way, use the If No Setup File method

Installing Drivers

Create a folder for what you are downloading

Example: Audio
Then download the zipped file to that folder

Then download and install Winzip
Go to the folder and right click and click Winzip extract to here

That will automatically make a folder and unzip files to it ( make a note of file path)

Then go to folder and click on Setup file and follow instructions displayed for installation

If no Setup file

1. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device ( or audio device Realtek, Soundmax C-Media etc ) and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the location of downloaded driver
8. Click OK and click Next
9. Wait while the Wizard installs the software
10. Click Finish.

don't forget the Restore Point

Well, I tried all of the above but it won't install all the way. I found the setup, and it starts installing, but it gets to 98% and then says there's an error, or my computer will just shut down. The update wizards say there is no better drivers, that the ones I have are fine, so I'm really at a loss here. I guess my pc sound is an unsolved mystery...any other suggestions? Thank you so much already, I'm learning alot about computers today!

Bookworm, I thank you for the assistance but the files won't install. I've extracted the files and started up the Setup and it starts to 'Configure' the hardware for installation but once it does that and seems to begin to DL it just closes down and reverts me back to my desktop. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks.

Thank you so much already, I'm learning alot about computers today!

check these out

Check Control Panel/ Sound & Audio Devices/ Audio tab/ Sound Playback click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be they something like "modem line 0 playback" might have been substituted for the proper audio device

Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) from the tree / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply / click Start > OK Reboot
