Check Control Panel/ Sound & Audio Devices/ Audio tab/ Sound Playback click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be they something like "modem line 0 playback" might have been substituted for the proper audio device

Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) from the tree / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply / click Start > OK Reboot

Everything in the Audio tab is grayed out, everything else is grayed out under the other tabs as well...so I couldn't do anything there.
And I checked the windows audio and it is on, already in automatic as well. I am so ready to throw this pc in the dumpster...is it a total loss??? Again, thank you so much for the help Bookworm! You're a charm!!!

Need to check your system Get Everest / copy and paste the Computer – Summary section. Leave out the Debug –PCI section.

Via audio driver here at ECS http://www.ecsusa.com/ECSWebSite/Pro...uID=45&LanID=8

Set a System Restore Point before installing driver just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore – click radio button Create a restore point and follow instructions

make a note of all you do

You need to go into the BIOS to check that audio is Enabled - all commands are done using the keyboard - arrow keys to select

Intel BIOS Commands

Table 6. BIOS Setup Program Function Keys
BIOS Setup Program Function Key Description
<←> or <→> Selects a different menu screen left and right arrow keys
<↑> or <↓> Moves cursor up or down up and down arrow keys
<Tab> Moves cursor to the next field
<Enter> Executes command or selects the submenu
<F9> Load the default configuration values for the current menu
<F10> Save the current values and exits the BIOS Setup program
<Esc> Exits the menu

as soon as comp boots press the <F2> key the Main menu opens
http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...Menu%20bar.JPG

use the right arrow key to select the Advanced menu
http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...dvanced%20.JPG

the down arrow key to select Peripheral Configuration - press Enter key
http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...0Config%20.JPG

check Audio it should show Enabled - if Disabled use arrow key to select Enabled - then press Enter

F10 key to Save & Exit

xp will load

install audio again

Don't forget the Restore Point
