try installing audio driver again

check this

Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) from the tree / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply / click Start > OK Reboot

Try a System File Check
go to Run - type "sfc /scannow" (without the quotes and note the space after sfc) - have the xp disc available in case sfc needs to repair or replace any files

No luck. I have no idea what's going on. I'm going to uninstall KB888111 (or remove the entry) from the registry in accordance to the Microsoft KB888111 instructions.

I want to give you some more info to help you help me!

1. I don't have a plug in sound card, mine is in the mother board.

2. I went to the Dell site and tried to download the driver i think i needed and this is the message I get when the download starts.

Also when I click on my media player this is the error message I get

"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly'"

Pls. help. Thanks

Here is another update on my situation. I have been reading through all the post trying to fix my problem.

I was able to download AC97 audio from realtek. I now have no yellow question marks "yeah" but still no sound :-(

In the device manger when you click on C-media AC97 Audio driver it states " No drivers are installed for this device" So I click on the update driver button and she starts downloading from the realtek site...yeah'

Then just when it's almost to the very end of the download, the computer shuts off ...NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO :-(

I NOW HAVE OVER 40 HOURS INTO THIS FIX, AND ALL I MANAGE TO DO IS REMOVE THE YELLOW QUESTION MARK.

Here is an updated Belar report, the last report said there were no drivers found

Join the club...I'm extremely frustrated as well. I honestly think there is little or no solution to my problem by simply installing drivers. I may have to reinstall the entire system. I REALLY DON'T WANT TO DO THAT. I can't believe that the only way to make a sound card work is by reinstalling everything. It's only a few drivers that we are looking at.

check these out

Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) from the tree / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply / click Start > OK Reboot

Try a System File Check
go to Run - type "sfc /scannow" (without the quotes and note the space after sfc) - have the xp disc available in case sfc needs to repair or replace any files

Try a System File Check
go to Run - type "sfc /scannow" (without the quotes and note the space after sfc) - have the xp disc available in case sfc needs to repair or replace any files

http://www.tymes.net/swenum/fix-swenum0.htm

I did try both of those and they didn't help. Additionally my PnP is enabled and working properly. Why does that link to tymes.com not have the Microsoft UAA Bus driver under System Devices? That appears on mine.
