We've got to be close.. I tried ur suggestion dling the intel thing and made sure my monitor is on the I/O board - rebooted with still no success!! Last night i dl a free driver prgm called driver max which the only thing i learned from their report was that a microsoft UAA bus driver for HD audio is not digitally signed?? I looked online for more info to recovering my sound but cant seem to get anywhere... Any other suggestions are welcome, as always thank you thank you for ur efforts.

I just checked that it is enabled. I also ran again the utility that tested the sound card while in the Setup Mode.

Do you know of a way to validate the registry entries for these kinds of things? I have a suspicion that my registry may be a problem. Unfortunately I can't restore to a previous state because it only goes back about 10 days (and 10 days ago I did something to wipe out months of history.)

What's your impression overall? I've got my fingers crossed as you have clearly helped about 5,000 people with their sound problems just from this thread.

if you have a XP disc or a disc with OS on
Try a System File Check
go to Run - type "sfc /scannow" (without the quotes and note the space after sfc) - have the xp disc available in case sfc needs to repair or replace any files

it will not give any prompts but will just run

I believe you asked me that a few days ago and the app ended with no information, which I assume meant it didn't do anything (or if it did I didn't notice anything.)

The Audio service is also enabled and on, it's enabled in the BIOS as well. The only other thing I can think of is when the sound was working, I was routinely using a USB speaker system. Obviously that doesn't work now, but I still see the USB Audio device/driver under my system tools. I think it might even be in one of those pictures I posted. Should I disable or uninstall that? I'm afraid that I may not be able to easily reconstitute it if I do so, hence my reticence up to now.

I plug headphones into the front panel jack. There are also rear ones. The partition utility that tests hardware devices tests both rear and front jacks.

I don't have the USB speaker even plugged in right now. It doesn't do anything anyway when I do because there is the dreaded "No Audio Device." Actually...maybe I'll try plugging in the USB speaker system just to see what happens. Or would it even be worth it to remove/install the integrated Realtek Audio card from the mother board? I'm not even sure if I can do that, it might be soddered on or something.
