Exclamation

I ran the scan, and it repaired several files. Then I restarted, and then installed the I/O audio driver set. Again, it was slow to shut down, and it hanged on restart. So I restarted on "last known good," which was post-scan. As it started up this time, it gave the messagae "no ADI is installed." Where do I get this ADI, and is it really what it needs?
Thanks!
Monica

They installed, and there was sound. The shutdown took a little longer than usual, but the windows shutdown sound played. Then I started it back up, and it reached the "Windows is starting up" screen, and it hanged. I gave it 30 minutes, hoping it would work itself out, but no progress. So I did a forced shutdown, started up in safe mode and restored it back to the post-chipset point. The yellow exclamation has returned to the Multimedia Audio Controller. I'm guessing at this point either the drivers are not the right ones (I don't know why they wouldn't be) or I have a hardware conflict. These speakers worked fine before I did the Windows XP reinstall. Any further ideas?
Thanks!
Monica

Try a System File Check
go to Run - type "sfc /scannow" (without the quotes and note the space after sfc) - have the xp or recovery disc available in case sfc needs to repair or replace any files

it will just run and give no prompts

ADI is the ADI 198x audio driver, look at the back of the tower, low down, are there any other audio plugs at all ?

Reinstalled Windows today cause it was acting funny/had a bad virus. I've got everything working again except this. I know this probably technically goes in the Vista forum cause that's what I'm running, but it there doesn't seem to be much in the way of response over there for people who have posted the "Yellow ! on my Multimedia Audio Controller help me!" problem over there.

Windows Vista Home Premium (build 6000)

Not hyper-threaded
Board: ASUSTeK Computer INC. M2N-SLI DELUXE 1.XX
Bus Clock: 200 megahertz
BIOS: Phoenix Technologies, LTD ASUS M2N-SLI DELUXE ACPI BIOS Revision 1102 06/20/2007

When it's downloaded, is it a folder that opens? if it is, click on Extract files, follow on screen prompts, then click on setup in the new folder.

Communications Other Devices

VIA Compatable Fast Ethernet Adapter

go here to Asus http://support.asus.com/download/dow...Language=en-us

under Others - install the Via 4 in 1 driver Package ( chipset driver ) then Restart your comp

Soundmax is a picky driver to install, try a force install this way - use the If No Setup File method

Installing Drivers

Create a folder for what you are downloading

Example: Audio
Then download the zipped file to that folder

Then download and install Winzip
Go to the folder and right click and click Winzip extract to here

That will automatically make a folder and unzip files to it (make a note of file path)

Then go to folder and click on Setup file and follow instructions displayed for installation

If no Setup file

1. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device ( or audio device Realtek, Soundmax C-Media etc ) and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the location of downloaded driver
8. Click OK and click Next
9. Wait while the Wizard installs the software
10. Click Finish.

Radeon driver here http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownloa...rer300-xp.aspx

look at Installation Instructions - you need Microsoft Net Framework 2 installed before installing the driver - there is a link to the driver under the installation instructions and also how to check if already installed.
http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles...TIProduct.aspx

Set a System Restore Point before installing Each driver just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore – click radio button Create a restore point and follow instructions

ADI is the ADI 198x audio driver, look at the back of the tower, low down, are there any other audio plugs at all ?

I pulled out the tower just to be sure, and there are no audio jacks in the expansion slots, just the one in the narrow space next to the fan and vents. When I install the ADI 198x audio driver, that's when I get sound just fine until I shut down, then it won't boot back up fully so I have to roll back to "last known good," which still includes the chipset update. The speakers I have on it now, Dell AX210, are not the originals. This set powers from USB as well as plugs into the audio jack. Would that make a difference to the kind of driver I would use?
Thank you for hanging in there with me!
Monica

That didn't fix it somehow, but I did figure out something that did. The onboard soundcard for some reason was no good, and I was getting the whole "we can't find a valid Creative card" when I tried to install the drivers for my other card thanks to some apparently well-known issue with Vista. I managed to find an openーsource version of the Creative drivers that worked though. I won't link them cause I wouldn't want someone else to risk it.
