sry, forgot to add this part. when i go to control panel and open up sound and audio devices and go to hardware, it says that my realtek ac'97 audio for VIA (R) audio controller has a Code 10. this is the driver i installed last night in attempts to fix my original driver i was having problems with (the one that i tried to play songs with that had no sound). this new one won't even let me play songs at all. the one i took off (that worked for the last year i've had this PC was the VIA AC'97 audio controller). thnx.

Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case

Then go here to Via tp get the VIA AC'97 driver http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx...SubCatID =104

Hope this helps

This from VIA on how to install To install the driver, save any unsaved work and close all applications then click on the driver download link (above). Choose the "Save File" option and save it to your folder under Windows where you file your drivers. Unzip the file. (To unzip the file right click and highlight "Extract All") Then double click on the Setup.exe file to run the installation program. Follow the prompts and restart at the end of the installation.

Hope this helps

In a word Google, this Gateway is an eMachine, the motherboard is First Intenational Computers the board K8MC51G, and once you are used to searching motherboards the clues are there. Of course they really don't want you to find them, but it can be done. happy listening

no clue what all that just meant, but you are quite successful at doing it, and thus i must conclude that you are a genius (also taking into account that there are 70 pages of this forum that you have been solving audio problems on for almost a year now). i will also come back to you for anymore problems i may encounter (i am currently enjoying my new Muse CD "Black Holes and Revelations") muchos gracias otra vez! es muy bueno ahora.
