Looked in add/remove programmes and there was realtek AC/97. Had a look in device manager And all drivers are enabled inlcuding realtek Ac'97.

This is the list.

Audio codecs
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Media Control Devices
MPU-401 Comapatible midi device
Realtek Ac'97 Audio
Standard game port
Video Codecs

Im not sure if i need to uninstall one of them for realtek to work?. Thanks

Edit. i've fixed the problem now. Thankyou bookworm and other people on this forum.

This may help

I too lost sound after a format on a HP Paviliov 542x after a full format with new partitions and install of commercial Windows XP Pro. With HP, native drivers included ONLY in the HP OS are required to use the onboard sound card. These drivers MUST be reordered DIRECTLY from HP, the cost is apprx. $25 US Dollars. They can be contacted through the online IM support. I'd assume that Dell and other will have similar conditions.

Good luck all, and the knowledgable please post any alternatives!

Cheers!

one more thing...

Check BIO upon start up go into Advanced tab and then check that onboard audio is either AUTO or ENABLED.

Hope I gave someone an easy fix.

Cheers!

Yellow question marks in Device Manager: "other devices", which if expanded gives a yellow exclamation/question mark for the Multimedia Audio Controller.

Have tried downloading and installing the WinXP audio drivers from ASUS, but can't run install.exe. Opened it with Winzip Pro, extracted the file....but no respone when I double click, or right click and select "open", or when I try running it from the start menu...

Thanks in advance for all the trouble....

Why don't you just download these for free from Hp.com?

Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case

Go here to ASUS http://support.asus.com.tw/download/...Language=en-us
input your P4S533-MX and when you get to model, click the Utilities tab along top, go to Audio - 5.12.01.3553 SoundMax for SiS, you have a SiS chipset board and this is I think the driver version you need.

Hope this helps

Just tried. It gives me the same problem; the install.exe file will not install....no matter what I do, it won't run. Any ideas?

Were looking for onboard audio here, is your system custom made or one of the big brand makers. Do you know the make and model of your comp if from one of the makers.

Cheers

Tried, HP doesn't post "native drivers"... I'm not completely sure how they differ from standard drivers, but they are not available for download from HP. I was told the divers for the AC97 on board sound from the Pavilion 542x will not work unless the native drivers embedded in the HP OS are present. Did HP support give me the wrong info?

In a word yes, HP do not offer the Audio when you search for this driver, they want you to pay, but if you can get to the motherboard you can get drivers free. See this http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html

524x in field - See support & troubleshooting information / Product Information / Motherboard Specifications / then get the Realtek ALC658 form here http://www.realtek.com.tw/index.aspx just type ALC658 in the Search box and there it is. Once you have the information then there is no need to pay for drivers. HP really, really annoy me, you have paid good money for their product and should exspect to get good online support. This in my opinion is robbery and why I so enjoy helping members to get the drivers they need for free one way or another. Sorry to go on but you should not have to pay again and again to maintain a system that you have bought.

Thats my rant for today lol!!!!

Cheers

hi bookworm

Thanks many for your help
I downloaded the driver and tried to run setup but it says
"via ac97 audio chipset is not enabled on this system . please enable it first on the BIOS then run this setup again."
I don't know how to go to BIOS and enable it. I am using XP OS.
Also I think by chipset for audio is a crystal one not VIA AC97. So will the above driver resolve the issue.

Please do reply me asap.

Thanks
Pavan

Custom, had it assembled by MyCom, so it's basically a random collection of bits and pieces...know this doesn't make things any easier

Anything specific I could look for...? Have checked, there are unfortunately no serials or anything on my tower....
